Why does Michael hate Toby so much? I was watching the episode where Michael is angry that Toby returned from Costa Rica and I was wondering why they have such a bad relationship. They could be friends, right?

Anything that Michael considers to be a great management mover or a great thing for a boss to do, is actually in all probability extremely inappropriate. Toby being HR is there to stop him from doing inappropriate things, so in Michael's eyes Toby is stopping the office from being, like, the best workplace ever. Which is unforgivable.
And also, since Michael has the maturity level of maybe a nine ano old, it's probably just really fun to hate someone. And Toby just takes it, so it's easy.


On a side note, does anyone else find it hilarious that David Wallace hates his HR rep? XP

Yeah I agree with Beef and also whenever Michael has an idea that happens to be non-work acceptable, Toby's the one to put a stop to it. He's basically a fun-killer in Michael's eyes. Poor Toby...

@bowg: That's actually not true at all. Michael says he doesn't like Toby because he's employed por corporate and therefore isn't under Michael's authority. Toby, as an HR rep, has to keep things appropriate and seguro for work, and por doing so he often ruins Michael's plans and fun. Michael considers his office a "family", and with Toby being under corporate's authority and not Michael's, he doesn't consider Toby apart of his family. Also, he's divorced, so he's realy not a part of his family.

well i think that micheal is jealous because toby always has a soulution to problams.

Michael doesn't like Toby because he is in HR (Human Resources). That means that he is from corporate and Michael doesn't feel like he is part of the Dunder Mifflin Scranton family.

The reason Michael hates Toby comes from Season One: Diversity Day; After Mr. Brown left and Michael called everyone to the conference room to talk about "diversity tomorrow" toby remarked "Are we going to sit indian style?" Michael got really mad, said that that was inappropriate, and he made toby go back to his job

they dont really ever come out and say why. if you watch a lot of episodes where michael and toby fight. then u might get your own opinion :)

Toby is from HR and takes orders from corporate and not michael, so Toby can turn down the things Michael finds funny for a workplace, and pretty much the only person who has the power to stop Michael. Therefore Michael hates Toby for taking away all the fun.
