Three-year-old Pilar Rodriguez was last seen on January 30, 1999 in Hollywood, Florida. Her dad, Marco Rodriguez allowed her babysitter, Melissa Cooper to take Pilar on vacation for two weeks.

Melissa took Pilar to the Trail Apartments in Punta Gorda, Florida where Melissa's boyfriend, Keith Allen Wilson accompanied them on their trip. When Pilar and Melissa failed to return by February 22, 1999, Marco called the police; however, Melissa and Keith didn't have Pilar with them, saying that Marco picked her up.

Keith claimed that he saw evidence that Marco physically abused Pilar; however, the police found no evidence that Marco was involved in Pilar's diappearance. Keith later said that Melissa (who is an insulin-dependent diabetic) collapsed in a store and ended up hospitalized and when Melissa came back to the hotel room, Pilar was gone. Melissa denied Keith's allegations.

Shortly after Pilar was reported missing, Melissa was found at her aunt's home in Wisconsin. She said that she fled from the vacation home that she was sharing with Pilar and Keith after Keith became physically abusive towards her and Pilar.

Melissa also stated that Keith punched Pilar and knocked her head into a wall which caused her to turn blue and have convulsions. Keith refused to get medical attention for Pilar because she had bruises from prior abuse and he was afraid of getting in trouble. After Pilar died, Keith put her body inside of a black trash bag and disposed of it in an unknown location.

Keith denied Melissa's allegations, saying that she was responsible for Pilar's death. He took a polygraph exam, but the results were inconclusive.

In November of 1999, Preacher's Lake (a popular swimming place located in Charlotte County, Florida) was drained by authorities after they received a tip from fishermen. They discovered unspecified biological matter they believed was a trace of Pilar's remains and it was announced that her case ws being investigated as a homicide. Police also discovered several child-size t-shirts in the lake including a Winnie the Pooh shirt that Pilar had when she left with Melissa. In February of 2001, the Peace River in Charlotte County, Florida was also searched, but no evidence was found.

In August of 2010, Melissa was charged with aggravated manslaughter. The arrest warrant for her alleged that she failed to protect Pilar from being injured and caused her death through "culpable neglience." In July of 2013, she pled guilty to being an accessory after the fact to murder and agreed to testify against Keith, who was arrested and charged with murdering Pilar.

In October of 2017, Keith was convicted of second-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison and Melissa faces up to 30 years in prison for being an accessory after the fact. Pilar's body has not been located and her case is still classified as an endangered missing person.
