lobos once existed throughout much of Europe. Conflicts with humans and fears originating from religious beliefs, myths and folklore influenced human attitudes towards lobos and, as a result, lobos have been persecuted for hundreds of years. Currently, lobos are found in many European countries, although range lines are not depicted in the map above. Main prey in this region generally consists of ungulate species, including livestock. Legal status, population numbers and trends vary country to country.

Malik

Malik, an Arctic subspecies of the gray wolf, was born May 8, 2000 and is a brother to Shadow. Malik is very curious lobo that shows little intimidation with strangers. He's described as easy-going por the lobo care staff and can be easily distracted por just about anything. Malik was placed in the Retired Pack in November 2009.

For each wolf, you will see a weekly photo, notes on behavior or physical health and a video clip. Please note, due to the large file size of the video clips, they will only be archived for 30 days.

Grizzer

Grizzer, a Great Plains subspecies of the gray wolf, was born on May 5, 2004. He is a littermate to Maya and has matured into a strong and big (120+ lb)... adult male. He was removed from the Exhibit Pack in March 2011 after the tragic loss of his littermate, Maya. It was determined that Grizzer had been losing confidence in his status and without the dominance of his littermate, he couldn't compete with the younger packmates. Grizzer is retired, but not currently living with the other retired wolves, Shadow and Malik. During the summer of 2011, an alternate enclosure is being planned...

National Zoo officials say the pups were born to 8-year-old Salina and 4-year-old Nopal. Keepers are monitoring the pups closely because maned lobo pups have a 50 percent mortality rate in the first month, according to zoo officials.

According to the National Zoo, the pups were born Jan. 5 and are the first litter born at the Front Royal location in two years. According to National Zoo officials, 72 maned lobo pups have been born at the Front...
