THE CALL OF KIND

The months came and went. There was plenty of comida and no work in the Southland, and White Fang lived fat and prosperous and happy. Not alone was he in the geographical Southland, for he was in the Southland of life. Human kindness was like a sun shining upon him, and he flourished like a flor planted in good soil.

And yet he remained somehow different from other dogs. He knew the law even better than did the cachorros that had known no other life, and he observed the law mais punctiliously; but still there was about him a suggestion of lurking ferocity, as though the Wild still...

THE GOD'S DOMAIN

Not only was White Fang adaptable por nature, but he had travelled much, and knew the meaning and necessity of adjustment. Here, in Sierra Vista, which was the name of Judge Scott's place, White Fang quickly began to make himself at home. He had no further serious trouble with the dogs. They knew mais about the ways of the Southland gods than did he, and in their eyes he had qualified when he accompanied the gods inside the house. lobo that he was, and unprecedented as it was, the gods had sanctioned his presence, and they, the cachorros of the gods, could only recognise this sanction....

THE SOUTHLAND

White Fang landed from the steamer in San Francisco. He was appalled. Deep in him, below any reasoning process or act of consciousness, he had associated power with godhead. And never had the white men seemed such marvellous gods as now, when he trod the slimy pavement of San Francisco. The log cabins he had known were replaced por towering buildings. The streets were crowded with perils - waggons, carts, automobiles; great, straining cavalos pulling huge trucks; and monstrous cable and electric ears hooting and clanging through the midst, screeching their insistent menace after...

CHAPTER VI - THE LOVE-MASTER

As White Fang watched Weedon Scott approach, he bristled and snarled to anunciar that he would not enviar to punishment. Twenty-four hours had passed since he had slashed open the hand that was now bandaged and held up por a funda, estilingue to keep the blood out of it. In the past White Fang had experienced delayed punishments, and he apprehended that such a one was about to befall him. How could it be otherwise? He had committed what was to him sacrilege, sunk his fangs into the holy flesh of a god, and of a white-skinned superior god at that. In the nature of things, and...

THE INDOMITABLE

"It's hopeless," Weedon Scott confessed.

He sat on the step of his cabine and stared at the dog-musher, who responded with a shrug that was equally hopeless.

Together they looked at White Fang at the end of his stretched chain, bristling, snarling, ferocious, straining to get at the sled-dogs. Having received sundry lessons from Matt, said lessons being imparted por means of a club, the sled-dogs had learned to leave White Fang alone; and even then they were lying down at a distance, apparently oblivious of his existence.

"It's a lobo and there's no taming it," Weedon Scott announced....

THE MAD GOD

A small number of white men lived in Fort Yukon. These men had been long in the country. They called themselves Sour-doughs, and took great pride in so classifying themselves. For other men, new in the land, they felt nothing but disdain. The men who came ashore from the steamers were newcomers. They were known as CHECHAQUOS, and they always wilted at the application of the name. They made their pão with baking-powder. This was the invidious distinction between them and the Sour-doughs, who, forsooth, made their pão from sour-dough because they had no baking-powder.

All of which...

THE ENEMY OF HIS KIND

Had there been in White Fang's nature any possibility, no matter how remote, of his ever coming to fraternise with his kind, such possibility was irretrievably destroyed when he was made leader of the sled-team. For now the cachorros hated him - hated him for the extra meat bestowed upon him por Mit-sah; hated him for all the real and fancied favours he received; hated him for that he fled always at the head of the team, his waving brush of a tail and his perpetually retreating hind-quarters for ever maddening their eyes.

And White Fang just as bitterly hated them back. Being...

THE FAMINE

The spring of the ano was at hand when Grey castor finished his long journey. It was April, and White Fang was a ano old when he pulled into the início villages and was loosed from the arreios, arnês, chicote de fios por Mit-sah. Though a long way from his full growth, White Fang, seguinte to Lip-lip, was the largest yearling in the village. Both from his father, the wolf, and from Kiche, he had inherited stature and strength, and already he was measuring up alongside the full-grown dogs. But he had not yet grown compact. His body was slender and rangy, and his strength mais stringy than massive, His casaco was...

THE COVENANT

When December was well along, Grey castor went on a journey up the Mackenzie. Mit-sah and Kloo-kooch went with him. One sled he drove himself, drawn por cachorros he had traded for or borrowed. A segundo and smaller sled was driven por Mit-sah, and to this was harnessed a team of puppies. It was mais of a toy affair than anything else, yet it was the delight of Mit-sah, who felt that he was beginning to do a man's work in the world. Also, he was learning to drive cachorros and to train dogs; while the cachorrinhos themselves were being broken in to the harness. Furthermore, the sled was of some service,...

CHAPTER IV - THE TRAIL OF THE GODS

In the fall of the year, when the days were shortening and the bite of the frost was coming into the air, White Fang got his chance for liberty. For several days there had been a great hubbub in the village. The summer camp was being dismantled, and the tribe, bag and baggage, was preparing to go off to the fall hunting. White Fang watched it all with eager eyes, and when the tepees began to come down and the canoes were carregando at the bank, he understood. Already the canoes were departing, and some had disappeared down the river.

Quite deliberately he determined...

CHAPTER V - THE LAW OF MEAT

The cub's development was rapid. He rested for two days, and then ventured forth from the cave again. It was on this adventure that he found the young doninha whose mother he had helped eat, and he saw to it that the young doninha went the way of its mother. But on this trip he did not get lost. When he grew tired, he found his way back to the cave and slept. And every dia thereafter found him out and ranging a wider area.

He began to get accurate measurement of his strength and his weakness, and to know when to be bold and when to be cautious. He found it expedient...

Lakota

Lakota, a Great Plains subspecies of the gray wolf, was born April 28, 1993 and was the omega female to her sister MacKenzie since they were pups. When MacKenzie died on May, 21, 2008, she became the sole surviving member of the Retired Pack. To help her with the separation anxiety that she experienced with MacKenzie's loss, Lakota was given access to the pack holding area for face to face contact with the Exhibit Pack, supervised visits to the lobo yard and lab, as well as visits from lobo Care Staff and the Curator's dog Jake. This eased the transition for her loss, and all of these efforts made her comfortable for the rest of her life.

CHAPTER IV - THE mural OF THE WORLD

By the time his mother began leaving the cave on hunting expeditions, the cub had learned well the law that forbade his approaching the entrance. Not only had this law been forcibly and many times impressed on him por his mother's nose and paw, but in him the instinct of fear was developing. Never, in his brief cave- life, had he encountered anything of which to be afraid. Yet fear was in him. It had come down to him from a remote ancestry through a thousand thousand lives. It was a heritage he had received directly from One Eye and the she-wolf; but to them,...

THE LAIR

For two days the she-wolf and One Eye hung about the Indian camp. He was worried and apprehensive, yet the camp lured his mate and she was loath to depart. But when, one morning, the air was rent with the denunciar of a rifle close at hand, and a bullet smashed against a árvore tronco, porta-malas several inches from One Eye's head, they hesitated no more, but went off on a long, swinging lope that put quick miles between them and the danger.

They did not go far - a couple of days' journey. The she-wolf's need to find the thing for which she searched had now become imperative. She was getting very heavy,...
