How do I get the good ending in Dawn of a New World?

my brother and i have been trying to beat the 2nd ToS for about 4 years now. we just leveled up enough to turn Richter into mincemeat, and we beat him... now we have to battle Marta and Lloyd, and we are Ratatosk. no matter who we kill first, we get the bad ending (emil stabs himself, turns into a core)... and the last journal entry makes me cry... is there something im doing wrong, or something else i need to do?

When I first fought them, I didn't want to kill them...... so I let them attack me. My sister wanted to see if anything changed if you defeated them. That's how we learned about the sad ending.
