I wonder how long he was on the rack for .. and if he tortured souls or not or if he was in a different part of hell.

I've never given much thought to it but now that its brought up...that is something to wonder a/b. lol

I figure he was tortured and then did some torturing. He was down there for a long time. I'd say he was probably well on his way to becoming a demon when the gate was opened. He'd probably earned a bit of freedom, so to speak, and was able to move around hell. How else would he claw his way out?

fanfly, i agree..john was in there for a very long time...maybe a 100 years? so, he had to do some torturing himself..hmmm...so many questions..

I don't think John would have suffered the same fate as Dean. Azazel owned his soul, and he seemed to genuinely like John and admire his abilities as a hunter. Doesn't he say to Sam, "Next to your daddy, you were my favourite", or something like that? Azazel wanted an army, John had the skills he was likely looking for to whip a few errant demons into shape. Lilith, on the other hand, was just a b*tch who wanted to make Dean suffer as much as possible.

I always assumed that John was another "righteous man" candidate who could also break the first seal by breaking in Hell, so he'd have gotten the same/similar treatment as Dean, but obviously he didn't break. Maybe he learned some of the plan back when Azazel possessed him, so he'd have additional motivation to resist. Then when the Hell-gate was opened, loads of demons were running around trying to get out of Hell, so the chaos gave John the opportunity to escape.
