In the first Paper Mario for example, Bowser steals the Star Rod and basically straight up mortally wounds Mario at the very start of the game using it's power and essentially leaves him for dead. If it wasn't for the Star Spirits using their reserved power the patch Mario back up and the fact that he conveniently landed near a friendly non-Bowser army affiliated Goomba Village where he could rest and regain his strength at, that would've probably been the end of our 1-up boy.
