hmmm
I love this article, but I don't quite agree with a major assumption that was made:

"...Suicide Squad‘s decision to not include any clear examples of abuse on either the Joker or Harley’s part..."

I don't think that is true. Clearly the manipulations are abusive (ie when he talks to her about diving into the vat, he leaves her to drown etc) and he fucking electrocuted her and talked about pimping her out. There is plenty of evidence of abuse in their story through the movie, but it is sugarcoated, as the article suggests in its title. And that is my main problem with the Joker and Harley storyline. We don't get any context to their relationship. We don't know why this Joker is seemingly more affectionate towards Harley in this version. We don't know what it was about her interactions with The Joker that made Harleen Quinzel make the decision to join him in insanity. We are being asked to bring a lot of Joker/Harley source material with us, but the source material is somewhat at odds with the Joker/Harley we see in the movie because they have removed some significant context. But there are traces of it through the movie, so I'm calling out the shite editing process again. Too much has been cut here, and that means we have been left with a romanticised Joker/Harley relationship that is really, really problematic.

I should qualify that comment by saying that the romanticised version of the relationship we get in the movie is problematic because of the removal of the context, not because it is a wrong representation of love in an abusive relationship. In fact, the romanticising of such a relationship, from both parties, is quite typical of abusive relationships. So the romanticising from a viewer perspective is where my beef lies.

I'm with you on your 1st point; Suicide Squad *did* show some scenes of abuse. And it would have been nice to see more of Harley falling for Joker in Arkham.
Yet, I was pleased with the new take on their relationship as a whole in the film. To see the Joker being affectionate towards Harley, while also being...well, the Joker, warmed my heart. LOVED that. I don't care about being judged for this opinion.
