Spuffy Article: Did Buffy amor Spike?

One of the most popular debates among the fellow BtVS fãs is if Buffy Summers, the heroine of the TV Show, was truly in amor with Spike. The majority of fãs who support Spike & Buffy say that she did - and some fãs argue that she didn’t. Some may go as far to say that she wanted to - but she couldn’t amor him, even after he gained his soul.
My opinion on the matter is nowhere near different then most of the Spike & Buffy fãs - that Buffy was in amor with Spike. Many may disagree with me, and many may agree.
Some of the statements that are listed down below are what fãs who believe that Buffy didn’t amor Spike reasoning’s for that personal opinion are - and why I argue and disagree with them.

She Was Still In amor With Angel

I do not believe that Buffy was still in amor with angel por the end of the series. I think she will always amor him, but was no longer in amor with him (yes, there is a difference). She had moved on years before, with Riley, and with Spike…the kiss she gave him (a kiss that should have never been added to the show, the whole storyline was sloppily done) was not a romantic kiss, it was a genuine “I’m happy to see you” kiss. Buffy even confirmed it later to Spike that’s all it was. And if she was still in amor with angel - or at least loved him mais than she loved Spike - then why did she sent him away? Why did she chose Spike as her champion and give him the amulet? Why did she spent what was her possible last night on earth with Spike, and not with Angel? Yeah, Buffy is definitely still in amor with angel *insert sarcasm here*

Also: Who says you can’t be in amor with mais than one person? It happens, you know.

Buffy Only Said She Loved Him Because He Was Dying

Okay, Buffy would never say “I amor you” to someone if she did not mean it. An dishonest act like that is just not Buffy. She couldn’t even say she those three little words to Spike in Season 6 - because she believed he was an “evil, soulless, thing,” yes, but I also believe because it was fairly hard for her to amor another vampire after everything that happened with her and Angel. Also, she was with Riley for a long time wasn’t she? And did she say “I amor you” to him? No. Why? Because she did not amor him and wouldn’t say it if she didn’t mean it.
And watch “Intervention” again. She admits to Giles that “love” feels strange to her - when she says “I amor you” to Giles, who we all know she loves for sure, she says “Love, love, love, it sounds strange!” So she could barely say those words to people she actually did love. And we all know the story on how hard it was for her to say it to Spike, of all people. And in the end, she finally does. And it didn’t seem to me that she was lying. Just look at her facial expression. She said it and she meant it.

If She Really Did amor Him, then Why Did She Say It At The Last Minute?

Sit down for a moment. And try to think about all the situations Spike & Buffy got enrolados in to in Season 6. And try to think about the whole dynamic relationship they have in general. They went through a lot of emotional pain and suffering in the past. Most people wouldn’t ever be able to get through it. Spike & Buffy weren’t just going to be all happy-and-dandy when Spike returned with a soul. They had actual issues to get through because of they’re violent and destructive past. Them falling into each other’s arm and happily crying how much they amor each other just because Spike has a soul now would just be unrealistic, it would be cheap.
That’s Buffy & Angel’s sort of thing, but anyway…
The way they played Spike & Buffy’s deep friendship in Season 7 was not only real and honest, but it was portrayed exactly how they’re new found relationship should be after everything that happened between them in the past. I’m not saying I would complain if they realistically got together sometime in the season or at least kissed once. But the way they treat each other that season is the best route to go in my opinion.
Which brings me to my point about this topic and why Buffy saying “I amor you” to Spike at that specific time was the best time for her to say it. He’s dying. He’s’ dying for her and the world - when he doesn’t have to. She now completely sees that he is redeemed, and that’s when she realizes that she could just say those words to him - because now, the past and all they have been through doesn’t change the fact that she is in amor with him.

GemonkDruid I love this article! I agree that Buffy was in love with Spike, but I think that Spike was in love with Buffy more.

adwbuffy Hey hun.. JulienBangel I didn't like the answer to ->She Was Still In Love With Angel xD THAT'S ALL WRONG..even in thE 7th serie she says that he's the one she's loved the most..I think it is so clear.. I agree tha she cares about Spike and he really is in her heart..and many other sweet things.. And Spike at first was just obsessed and then he got the soul for her..I think he loved her deeply..but she'll never love him the same.. "Love isn't brains childrens" Both vampires were born to make her suffer..but she loves Angel anyway..she can't stop..even if she wants to be with Spike or Riley or any other man..it's just because she CAN'T BE with Angel..But she WANTS to!!!!

You thinking that Buffy is still in love with Angel and will only want to be with Spike or Riley since she can't be with Angel is fine, that's your own opinion. The only reason why Buffy said that in S7 was coz Joss Whedon wanted to keep both shipper teams satisfied and not to form an angry mob around his house. He does value his life, ya know. adwbuffy I think everyone has there own opinion especially expressing there true feelings on their shippers. I mean I do love both Angel & Spike with Buffy. She loves them both equally. She had a serious relationship with Angel for "Three years" & She has grown and after her death experience she used Spike for her own pleasure trying to feeling punish for being back. But Buffy realizes that her relationships with Angel & Spike is that they both know her, she is a hero and a slayer. Destined to save the world..

MissKitty28 Good article :) I agree with this point of view. In my opinion, yes, Buffy did love Spike. I have no doubt about it. She loved Angel by the three first seasons, and as a first love, she will never forget him. I mean, it's natural. But by the end of the show, I think it was more an idealization than a real love. Like OCfan123, I don't think she was still in love with Angel by the end of the season 7. Because pretending to love someone while you don't have see him/her since a long time, that this person doesn't know who you are and doesn't know what is your life now, that's not my definition of love. Angel in on a pedestal in Buffy's mind because of many reasons, but it's not love, and I think she needs to realize this. She was really falling in love with Spike, and it was really, really powerful and strong, because she loves him for who he is ; I mean, she knows Spike as a villain and she knows Spike as a good man, she knows what he's able to do. Like Spike said to her in Touched, he has seen the best as the worst of her, and in despite of it, he loves her. I think the same thing can be apply to Buffy towards Spike. I think season 6 was the basis of her feelings for him (she was emotionaly lost in this season, but I'm sure that strong feelings were there), and the season 7 was the development. I just have to watch their scenes and their interractions for seeing it. I can express myself better in my maternal language, so I regret that I can't developping more my thoughts on the topic. But yes, she is totally in love with him. It's another way of loving, more mature and their relationship was more adult and subtle. And I mean, come on, they are totally made for each other :P They are amazing together ♥

autumnday77 I don't know what it's like in other languages, but in mine (Norwegian) we have two expressions that can be translated with "love". The first is "være glad i" which could be the same as "being fond of", but somewhat stronger. This expression is used in many relationships - with close friends, family and boyfriend/girlfriend. You also have the word "elske" which is very strong when applied to people, and so to speek only used in romantic settings - "I love you more than anything in the world"... So I wonder which of these meanings you apply on the relationship betw Spike and Buffy. It seems clear to me that Spike at first was "only" in love with Buffy, it was lust, it was physical, a crush. Then he showed a deeper devotion, taking care of Dawn for Buffy and so on. When they had sex it was mostly about lust again... he got really territorial and tried to force her to love him. In season 7 his feelings where still strong, but he was more grown-up and could see that she had to choose for herself. Buffy seemed confused in season 5, she loathed him and then liked him and even trusted him enough to include him in the battle in the end of the season. When they had sex in season 6 it was just physical for her, it seemed like none of them could think above that:) Then after a while (in season 7 at least) she again found that she could trust him emotionally, and she showed it in every way. I think Buffy got to love Spike like a brother, a close friend and confidant - but not as the most important person in her world. She shared her devotion between several friends and family. It's not that I don't think her relationship with Spike was special! And it was really more exciting than her relationship with Angel.

maryksand Great article! Adding my two cents: IMO, Buffy did love Spike. It was another kind of love, not the one she had for Angel, but that is understandable since she's grown up and Spuffy was a more adult kind of love. I think Buffy started having feelings for Spike in season 6. After he prooved his loyalty to her in S5 by willing to sacrifice his "life" for her and Dawn and also after keeping his promise to Buffy and taking care of Dawn after Buffy's death (S6), Buffy learned to respect him and trust him in a way. We can see Buffy opening up to Spike in S6, the way she couldn't open up to anyone else. He was the first she told about heaven. They already had this connection even back in S5 when Buffy told Spike about her mother's illness while she didn't even tell her boyfriend Riley about that. In S6 Spuffy connection only grew stronger. Buffy and Spike shared a bound long before starting having an affair. Also it is pretty telling that Buffy was always the first to make a move, like in Intervention it was her to kiss him, in OMWF when Spike was about to leave she stopped him. By that time Buffy had both trust and attraction for Spike (that is why she chose him and not some random guy in S6, which prooves she wasn't just using Spike. [i]He[/i] was the one to make her feel something and not anyone else), but however she couldn't trust him completely to love him for real. In S7 Spike prooved to Buffy that he actually deserved her by getting his soul back for her and Buffy supported him through the hardest time (asking Xander to let Spike live with him, defending Spike from Giles and Wood, doing everything to help Spike with the chip when it was killing him, asking to remove the chip completely, because she trusted Spike, etc). Spike was by Buffy's side when no one was without asking anything in return and I believe in Touched Buffy finally allowed herself love him and came to terms with her own feelings for this vampire. In The End of Days Buffy stopped Spike when he was standing in the doorway ready to leave (notice, again it was Buffy making the first move) and said she is tired of denying her feelings for him and tired of "mixed signals". She was ready to start it all over with Spike and wanted to talk about their relationship, but he stopped her saying that they can do it later. I do however, think Buffy was still in love with Angel in S7. But you know, I still love my first love too. Angel was Buffy's first real and string feeling and not enough time has passed since their break up so it is logical that she still had feelings for him. But she wanted to explore her relationship with Spike and chose to spend the nights that could be her last in Spike's arms, not Angel's. And of course I believe that Buffy would never say "I love you" to someone if she doesn't mean it. Nevermind5555 No. Buffy didn't love Spike. At the beginning it was just all about sex, he was like her sex machine, what I just hated to watch. I'm a huge Bangel fan but I try to look objective. And still the only man Buffy was truly in love with was undeniable Angel, she would give up anything for him. She somehow had some feelings for Spike later (season 7) but that wasnt love. Buffy was just always kind of a girl who felt lonely, after heartbreaking loss of Angel (season 3) or after season 2 when she had to kill him she just tried to forget ,so there were some guys like Scott (for a little while) then pretty long Briley, because she was kind of a girl who couldn't be alone. She felt good with Riley, but she never told him she love him, because she didn't even he knew that, thats why he left. She was strong and incredible as a Slayer, but in her private life being single didn't work for her. Having such an amazing love like she and Angel shared doesn't mean that for the rest of your life you have to grieving and never again be in a relationship. Because not everyone can do that, and Buffy is definitely that kind of a person. The truth is that everything what we call Bangel can not be compared to any other 'relationship' Buffy had. Someone has to be blind if he can't accept that. All the emotions, sadness Buffy had while Angel turned into evil or when he left Sunnydale or just whatever was going on between them, she never ever had and felt again. She gave her all to this relationship. It was epic True Love Always and never happend to her again. Something like that happens only once in a lifetime. First, true love is first true love you can't forget or replace that, especially if its as deep as Bangel.

Yes she is saying she can't love anything more than she loved Angel, but does the past tense show she doesn't love him that much anymore? true she can never love Spike as much, but it doesn't mean she doesn't love Angel the way she did, people change, love changes. Plus this was from a speech, she said this to get people to understand sacrifices have to be made, not to profess her love to angel.

Sphix21 Just finished the 7th Season - again...(I'm always so sad, when I watch the last EP) I'm SPUFFY all the way! Bangel was just a cheesy love fest for me...yes, sure she loved Angel...But Angel never really got her point...he was just mourning and whining...To be honest, I didn't even liked Angel TILL! He got his own Series and I started to like him - with Cordelia! I think Buffy loved Spike and he was the one she really trusted...I mean..who comforted her, when her friends turned on her? SPIKE! I liked Buffy with Riley too...But no one else understood her so well, like Spike..
