The Illuminati was an organization of men of science, philosophy and religion who wished to share the knoweldge with the people to make a better world. It is said to founded in 1776 but that encontro, data is debateable. In those times everyone was all about religion and the blood of the lamb, scientists and astronomers were deemed witches and burnt at the stake, so men like Da Vinci, painter, astrologer and inventer were deemed to be evil and was kept seguro within the Illuminati to carry on his life's work, which he believed would better mankind and the world.
The Illuminati translates to The Enlightened. They were not evil men worshipping the devil or killing off celebs and governments, they were just scared old men who had large brains and were deemed evil because they could understand things others did not, and worked tirelessly to disprove and prove their findings.

As for the modern Illuminati - It is said (and here it's only a rumour) that governments around the world, including dignataries from Russia, England and America (among other countries) are part of the Illuminati group who wish to make a 'New World Order' por brain-washing the people through advertisments and epidemics. There is no substantial evidence that the Illuminati still exists or that celebrites and government officals of today are in the group. They may be, but then again they may not.

The illuminati is those associated with evil in the world and are responsible for the chaos that exists today and has existed throughout history, they only just came up with the name in 1776. Essentially they control how things go to a point, since they have no real power over the truth, and it is the truth that they distort in order to deceive and have people fall into their clever traps. I like to call them devils, others choose Illuminati, and most are actually followers themselves.
