I would stand up for myself and just walk away. The bully will get less interested if you don't give a reaction.

Define "putting you down", because that could mean 3 things to me.
It could mean that I'm being attacked and the other person intends to kill me, it could mean that I'm in a debate and being hammered por opinions, or it could mean I'm being called out. I could react differently in all these scenarios.
