They are not actual holidays. I can only answer for the US. I beleive the reason for the five dia work week goes back to the Christian faith of the founding fathers. Saturday is the Jewish Sabbath. Christians moved their dia of worship to Sunday, because Christ ressurection occured on the first dia of the week. (Sunday) I could be wrong, but I think I'm correct. When I was a kid, nothing was open on Sundays.
