What does "facing one's own mortality" mean?

I've heard people say it before, but not fully understood what it meant. In a movie, this mother said her son had to face his own mortality. And he was dying, because that was what the movie was about, for the most part. Does it mean that you're coming to terms that everybody dies? And you will, too, some day?

Just so you know, this pergunta was NOT about what AaaaaGirlygirl said. It was about a mother whose son was dying from an illness, saying that he must face his own mortality, because he was close to death.
