In terms of camera, make sure you set yourself up with the things you'll need to shoot what you want.. For example if you want to shoot macro make sure you get a macro lens..

I'd also say use auto as little as possible! it is no fun taking fotografias how the camera wants to.. It takes some of that glory away when there is something amazing on the screen if you know you didn't actually create that..
