As a little mais time passed, Jane began to realize that she could still care deeply for Kyle if they were friends. They didn't have to be romantically involved with each other. She felt that maybe she wasn't ready for romance after all. Besides, she hadn't even turned fourteen yet. On the last Friday of November, Jane was walking to her history class, as usual. Kyle's girlfriend, Morgan, walked up to Jane and asked, "Are you trying to take away my man?" Jane said, "I'm not trying to take anything away from anyone, and he's not a man yet. He's only fourteen." morgan pushed Jane down. Jane said, "I don't want to fight." She tried to get up, but morgan began beating on her. morgan said, "Go ahead! Beg me to stop!" Jane replied, "There's no way in hell and high water I'd beg to you!" morgan continued to beat Jane. Paula heard the commotion and rushed over to see what was going on. She saw morgan beating Jane up. Paula was not about to let morgan beat Jane within an inch of her life. Paula yelled at Morgan, "You leave my best friend alone!" morgan said, "I'm really scared, Paula. What are you going to do?" Paula said, "Get away from her!" morgan said, "No." Paula stood her ground. morgan then punched Paula in the face. Jane wanted to get up to help her best friend, but she was hurt very badly. Finally, they heard a voice say, "Morgan! Get away from my friends!" It was Kyle. morgan said, "Kyle, I was only protecting you." He said, "By hurting my friends?!" She said, "I'm you're girlfriend." He said, "But Jane and Paula are my friends. We're through, Morgan! I cannot encontro, data someone who tries to hurt my friends!" morgan left in disgust. Kyle rushed over to Jane and Paula. He asked, "Are you two okay?" Paula said, "Yeah." Jane said, "I can't get up." Paula and Kyle helped Jane get up. They took her to the nurse's office. The nurse said, "I think Jane will be okay, but it might not hurt to get some x-rays to make sure there aren't any broken bones." Jane was sent to the hospital. Fortunately, she did not have any broken bones. She only escaped with bruises. The seguinte day, Paula and Kyle went to Jane's house to check on Jane. Letty answered the door. Kyle asked, "Who are you?" Letty replied, "I'm Letty, Jane's cousin. Are you here to see Jane?" Paula said, "We are." Letty said, "Come on in. Jane's parents are out of town for the day, so her parents asked me to look after her." Paula and Kyle made it to Jane's bedroom. Jane was resting in her bed. She smiled when she saw her friends. Paula asked, "How are you doing?" Jane replied, "I'm doing okay. I only sustained bruises. You arrived just in time, Paula." Paula said, "I was happy to receive a black eye for you." Jane said, "I never thought I'd hear anyone say that." Kyle said, "If I had never dated Morgan, you two wouldn't have gotten hurt like this. I'm so sorry. This is all my fault." Jane said, "Kyle, don't be so hard on yourself. It's not your fault." Paula said, "That's right. You had no idea morgan was going to hurt us." He said, "I guess you're right. We'll say it was Morgan's fault." Jane and Paula said at the same time, "Agreed."

Carl finished telling his story. John said, "This was a very touching story. I understand what you've been through." He wiped a tear from his eye. Peter had been crying, too. He said, "You're living a good life, mate." Stan, who rarely cried, was also crying. He said, "Yes, especially compared to what you've been through." Allen said, "I'm really glad you are living a good life." Erin and Lola hugged Carl. They admired how Valente he was for telling his story. Erin, of course, sort of knew what he went through. After all, she had been abused por her grandfather. Paul placed a hand on Carl's shoulder and said, "You're a Valente man, Carl. You're a Valente man." Carl said, "Thanks for supporting me while I told my story. I'm glad that things have turned out for the better."
