\'Outlander\' costume design is getting a \'bling\' Season 2 makeover
"Outlander\'s" iconic look is going to get a major makeover as the series heads into Season 2. Production is already underway as the Starz drama is gearing up for its May 31 Season 1 finale, and showrunner Ron Moore is excited for what the new season will bring.
While Season 1 was set in the 18th century Scottish Highlands and, to a lesser extent, in Inverness in the 1940s, Season 2 will switch over into a new setting: Paris during the reign of King Louis XV. The transition will be set up in the show\'s upcoming finale, but for now fans should know this means an entirely new look to the series, particularly in Terry Dresbach\'s costume design.
"It\'ll look totally different. It\'s a whole new wardrobe, it\'s a whole new color palette, it\'s different fabrics. Now you\'re dealing with the court of Louis XV, you\'re dealing with French aristocracy," Moore tells Zap2it. "It\'s Paris, it\'s an urban environment, it was the fashion leader of the time. Literally we\'ve created an entire new wardrobe for the show."

Moore attended the unveiling of A Tartan Affair, Starz\'s For Your Consideration Emmy push for "Outlander\'s" costumes, at Los Angeles\' The Grove shopping center on Friday, May 22. The exhibit will run through May 31. There fans can get a close-up look at the outfits Dresbach designed, like Claire\'s wedding dress, Jamie\'s kilt and Black Jack\'s Red Coat uniform -- the latter being Moore\'s favorite costume in the series.
For Moore, collaborating with Dresbach, who is his wife, is a unique experience. He admits he lets her work fairly autonomously crafting the intricate fashions the "Outlander" characters wear.
"We talked really early days when I was first pitching and selling the show, because she had been a fan of the books forever," he says. "She had ideas in her head about how they would look and what the costumes would potentially be, and then I had to talk her into doing the show. From that point on, it\'s pretty much been all her."
"Outlander" is hardly the first series to recreate historical time periods, but Moore credits Dresbach\'s authenticity to the era as what sets the show apart. He feels other properties\' attempts to modernize costumes -- "just make it younger and hipper -- because that\'s how you get today\'s audience" -- dates those shows and talks down to their viewers.

"I think our decision was just to play the 18th century like the 18th century, play the \'40s like the \'40s; it\'ll look cool, and we can stand with it and give a sense of reality to what\'s going on," he says.
That will continue into Season 2. Fans can expect to see "Outlander" lean into the high fashion of 18th century Paris, which means more elaborate outfits and more finery.
"I think that the clothes that [Dresbach] came out for the principle female characters are really astonishing and really great," Moore says. "It\'s brighter colors. It\'s more colorful. If you look at the Highlander outfits, they\'re much more neutral and earth tones. Paris was bling. It was much more fashion-forward. There\'s much more gold in the sets, there\'s more finery and gilt and candelabras and that sort of thing in the background. The ladies wore a lot more silks, more elaborate embroideries, hats; it\'s that kind of thing."
"Outlander\'s" Season 1 finale airs Saturday, May 31 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on Starz. Season 2 is slated for a 2016 premiere date.
