Very.

What he did was horrible! He told his own son to go die, and die in a way that would make him proud. Disgusting! He didn't even try hiding his feelings.

Yes he was a bad father. If you watch the extended Version of Two Towers you get mais of his character and you see how awful he was to Farimir. In the Extended version there is something he said Borimir can do that Faramir can't but in the end it was Faramir who could do it and Borimir who could not.

So Yes he was a Bad Father

On the one hand, he treated his children quite badly, especially Faramir :( But on the other hand, they were both really good people, especially Faramir! So he must have been doing something right :) Or perhaps it was their mother.

Denethor said:
No. I believe that he was being cruel to Faramir only because Faramir reminded him of himself. The reason he favoured Boromir is because Boromir was very different from himself. I also believe that he was very depressed at that time. ( considering that he killed himself.) He was also still depressed because his wife had died many years ago. Then he began using the Palantir to test Sauron's mental strength. Even though Denethor was a Numenorean with foresight, wisdom, and a strong mind, Sauron still managed to fill the stewards mind with horrible visions which depressed him even mais and caused him to begin the ascent to insanity. When Boromir died he got worse, and por the time Gandalf and Pippin arrived at Minas Tirith, the madness was growing too fast. Then when Faramir became wounded and deathly ill, that was the last straw and his mind broke. He proceeded then to burn himself and Faramir alive, but gandalf and pippin thwarted his plans to burn Faramir. In the end he managed to burn himself alive on his pyre, but before he died he realized how cruel he had been to Faramir as he saw him being taken away por gandalf, and then his life ended. Thus ends my explanation of why Denethor seemed like a horrible father, but really wouldn't have been that bad at all if he had been in his right mind.
