I like Matt, mostly because I have to smile whenever he is the one who gets in trouble for a change instead of Lizzie.
One example of that is in the B-story of the Season 2 episode She Said, He Said, She Said. Basically, Matt and his friend Lanny missed the bus while on a class trip; when they found a penny and used it for Heads or Tails (with Heads = Go back to school and Tails = take the rest of the day off), they flip it and it lands on Tails. Matt and Lanny then take the opportunity to have fun downtown the rest of the day. However, Matt gets quite the surprise when he comes back home.
Jo: And, you know, the funny thing is, there was a parade, after the baseball game.
Matt: Really, a parade? Do tell.
Jo: And I could’ve sworn I saw a little boy who looked just like you on one of the floats.
Matt: Me?
Jo: No way, right? Except that then, the school called.
Matt feels that the jig is up when Sam says the school told him and Jo that Matt had been missing all afternoon, and made it back just in time to come home.
Finally, Jo snaps at Matt, angrily asking him what he was thinking. So, Matt explains, ending with “I wanted to do the responsible thing — and I did, I did! Is it my fault that the penny told me to take the rest of the day off? Is it? Is it?”
Jo replies with “Matt, the responsible thing would be to have called us — not to go gallivanting all over town. You should know better!”
