(Just so you know, when I say Americans, I mean the US, not North America.)

I used to be proud to be an American. I believed we were such a great country. But, as time went on, that pride began to fade. The reasons to be proud diminished one por one. Recently, my eyes were completely opened and I realize just how far behind my country truly is.

All it took was one video. A commercial. It was for the Israel Gay Youth Group. I did research. I realized. South Africa is allowing gay marriage, as well as several other countries. Israel is very pro-LGBT rights. Most of their commercials show this sort of thing. I found out the US has been censoring and banning “gay” commercials.

One commercial was simply two gay men, in a committed relationship. They were talking about how they designed their início with furniture from the store. The commercial aired only once, in Washington D.C. and New York. Why once? Because the store, Ikea, began receiving bomb threats. Apparently two committed adults of the same gender is too scary a concept for most Americans.

I look at these other countries. They embrace homosexuality, bisexuality, and the transgendered. And yet, here we are, lagging behind. Every time I hear about these things, it makes me angry and sad. But they also inspire me. I want to make a difference here. I want people like me to be able to live out our lives as freely as the heterosexuals.

I want America to live up to its name.

I met this girl maybe a mês before Valentines dia and I always talked to her. Everyday. About almost everything. She was everything I looked progressivo, para a frente to when I got início from school or futebol practice. Then I began to realize I was falling for her. And I guess it was my first experience with feeling real amor for someone. My coração literally ached for her. Meanwhile, I had another friend that I had known longer. We were pretty tight. She was a lesbian also but I saw her as a sister. We were all talking and such about things and I was very well aware of the fact that the girl I liked had a boyfriend....

I hugged a man in his underwear. I think jesus would have too.

I spent the dia at Chicago’s Pride Parade. Some friends and I, with The Marin Foundation, wore shirts with “I’m Sorry” written on it. We had signs that said, “I’m sorry that Christians judge you,” “I’m sorry the way churches have treated you,” “I used to be a bible-banging homophobe, sorry.” We wanted to be an alternative Christian voice from the protestors that were there speaking hate into megaphones.

What I loved most about the dia is when people “got it.” I loved watching people’s faces as they saw...
