When I first saw the show I actually thought Knuckles was a hedgehog. But then I noticed how different he looked from Sonic, Amy and Shadow. He's an echidna. I also found out he's the soul survivor of angel Island, which means he's the very last echidna

yes and no...he´s an echidna but echidnas are a kind of hedgehogs wich live in australia, dig theirselves in(see knuckles´ shovel claws) and eat ants...
echidna have spikes too like every hedgehog but all oft the sonic echidna have dreads, this is because u dont see that he has spikes(like sonic)...
i think u already noticed that knuckles hasn´t ears...well this is because of his dreadlocks
