This is the bit in Breaking Dawn when Garrett asks Kate if her power can really send a vampire flat on its back. In the book, its told from Bella's point of view, so here it is told from Garrett's.
Everyone around me relaxed as Zafrina stopped her illusions for them. But I couldn’t care less about Zafrina’s illusions. I remembered on one of my first days here – I had been told how far Kate’s power went. How powerful it was. Sure, she could shock people. But could she really knock them down with a single touch? Was she really that close to Jane?
Suddenly murmurs surrounded me, as if wary that Zafrina would decide to continue her illusions before Bella was ready. I realized Kate wasn’t talking to anyone else yet, just watching Bella with curious eyes. Bella didn’t seem aware she had Kate’s attention.
“Kate,” I said, deciding I had to know if Kate’s power was that powerful.
Bella suddenly looked up, and I felt mais gazes following me. I was sure the Denalis would be watching – and maybe someone else? Everyone could watch for all I cared.
“I wouldn’t, Garrett,” Edward warned me as he read my mind.
I ignored him, carrying on towards Kate. Edward really annoyed me sometimes. Couldn’t he just leave my mind in peace? Kate was looking at me, as if asking me mentally what I was about to say to her.
“They say you can put a vampire flat on its back,” I pondered. If it was true, I probably didn’t want to annoy her.
“Yes.” Then Kate smiled, understanding where this was going. She then wiggled her fingers playfully at me. “Curious?”
I shrugged, trying not to give too much away. “That’s something I’ve never seen,” I said casually. “Sounds like it might be a bit of an exaggeration . . .?” I left the pergunta hanging.
Kate’s smile disappeared and her face suddenly turned serious. The change was so quick; I didn’t even see the transformation between expressions. “Maybe,” she said, and I wondered if I had offended her. “But maybe they only work on the weak or the young. I’m not sure. You look strong, though. Perhaps you could withstand my gift.” She held out her hand; palm up, to invite me to try.
I smiled. It seemed it was unlikely she could knock me on my back. So I decided to give it a shot. I was sure I looked confident as I touched my index finger to her palm. I was sure I didn’t look that confident as my knees buckled under and I was unable to stop them. A stinging shiver went through me; down my spine. I heard myself give a loud gasp as my head hit a patch of granite incredibly hard, letting out a loud crack. I could feel shivers of electricity passing through me for what seemed like a while more, but what was probably just a few seconds.
Then it stopped and my eyes widened as I looked up at Kate. She was smirking, of course. She had known what had happened. She had hustled me. Tricked me into taking punishment for doubting her. But I couldn’t do anything but stare at her now. How could someone be that powerful? Was it possible that Jane had met her match?
“Wow,” I breathed. It was all I could think of – all I could say.
“Did you enjoy that?” she asked.
I got slowly to my knees, shaking my hair. “I’m not crazy.” I laughed. “But that was sure something.” I looked up at her again, with a smile.
“That’s what I hear.” She shrugged.
Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Edward roll his eyes. Why did he always have to be picking brains? Couldn’t he at least try to be normal? Or at least disguise it better?
So what I had heard about Kate was true. She had sent me on my back, and I couldn’t even help it. I’d bet it still worked on Emmett. I saw Tanya, Carmen and Eleazar murmuring together. Of course they had been watching. And they had found it entertaining how I hadn’t believed their story about Kate. And, like Kate, they had known what would happen.
