One other nice occurrence at last weekend’s epic four-day tribute to Robert Downey Sr. in Los Angeles:  I had the chance to chat with several members of Team Downey, including company president David Gambino.  So - straight from the horse’s mouth: David told me “Sherlock Holmes 3” is “very much in the works” and confirmed what Dan Lin told me last spring: that Justin Haythe (“Revolutionary Road”) is the scriptwriter.  This is (still!) good news, because Haythe is a superlative writer (“The Lone Ranger,” ahem, notwithstanding…and almost none of that was his fault…). Pick up his excellent novel, “The Honeymoon,” which was shortlisted for the prestigious Man Booker Prize, and see if you don’t immediately get swept up in it.  Haythe’s specialty, in his scripts at least, seems to be turning big actioners into more personal, relatable stories: “Despite the scale, everything has to be real and moving and emotional,” he told the Wall Street Journal in a recent interview. 

I mentioned to David that we, the fans who cherish the Sherlock Holmes movies, would love to see the next movie include the fallout between Holmes and Watson over Reichenbach, and would plead that it not be swept under the rug, but would form a compelling emotional through-line underneath whatever capers the boys get into.  He seemed to take this quite seriously, even though he couldn’t, of course, confide anything about whatever plot they have at this point.  Another plus: Gambino is, at heart, a great storyteller himself, and truly knows the value of what’s on the page. 

So — we shall see as this unfolds.  Anyway - there’s the latest; no rumors, just the facts.  Too early in the process for much more, but at least it confirms all that we’ve heard.
