Although strictly speaking it's not an intirely English, or even British cast, (lots of Irish actors in the film - both Dumbledores, Moody, Luna, Seamus) But what I do like is the way that most characters stick with where they are supposed to be from, if its specified, it's better than trying to get a big name American actor to play a British kid or something?
Harry Potter is about the only decent thing with British have, it's nice they have kept it quaint and authentic, if an american could pull off the accent tho, I would have no qualms about that!
i'm sure the producers wanted all british too. I've seen american kids act as different nationalities and it was awful. In the book it is set in England and the kids are British i.e. the kids must be british.
it is set in england and so the accents/actors shd fit, it wouldnt work if it had actors like tom cruise as harry julia roberts as ron, and jessica alba as hermione but u can bet that this was prob in the offing! lol ok i may be exaggerating slightly but u knw wat i mean. i selected no nonetheless coz not all the cast are english! Richard Harris (dumbledore), Michael Gambon (dumbledore), Kenneth Brannagh (Gilderoy Lockhart), Shirley Henderson (moaning Myrtle), devon Murray (seamus Finnegan), Evanna Lynch (Luna Lovegood) are irish.
Robbie Coltrane (Hagrid), Katie Leung (cho Chang), David Tenant (bertie Crouch Jnr) are scottish.
Clémence Guichard (Fleur Delacour)is French.
Predrag Bjelac (Igor karkarof) is Serbian.
Stanislav Ianevski(Viktor Krum) is Bulgarian.
Great post nickelhatton2, I knew there were tons of Irish actors in the film but couldn't remember them all in my post above! Oh and Sean Biggerstaff who played Oliver Wood is Scottish also.
Also Evanna Lynch who plays Luna is actually from Co. Louth which is in the Republic of Ireland, rather than Northern Ireland.
Ye i get what people are sayin but i think that they ment British and the people from scotland are british and the people who are from Ireland are from Northan ireland and that is in the Uk
I think that the actors should play the characters the nationality that they are in the book. Like if there was an American character, an american actor would play it or the fact that luna and seamus are irish in the books they should be played by irish actors or they should put on an Irish accent.
does that make sense?
Well they're accent is awesome, I should say. I definitely agree but it's not all english, you know, Irish like Dumbledore and Luna. It's like they slur their tongue gracefully enough to keep that accent. For example if we (not British) say can, we say it with a long a sound. For them it's like short a but slurried. And like in car, it's almost like they say "cah", which is car with a silent r. Or water, that's a good example. They pronounce it like "wou-tah" or something. They silent off the r if pronounced as if it's in the end of a syllable. It doesn't entirely have to be the end of the word. Like Hermione, they pronounce it as "heh-moy-ny" or art, which they pronounce like "aht". It's good. My cousin has a language tutor, and my second cousin [which is British] taught my little brother how to say stuff in British.
It's better this way. JKR requested that they keep the cast British and Irish, it keeps the integrity of the books. If they had Americans it would be weird. Of course they'd make exceptions for the foreign wizards in GoF because that's just common sense. I get the whole thing about foreign extras, but that would be more expensive.
@Ginnyweasleyfan - yeah she was but she was Scottish born, so i suppose that counts as British.
All the characters are British, so it's good the actors are too. Unless there are foreigns with amazing British accents, because bad accents do somewhat ruin a movie,
Kevin Costner couldn't do a decent accent in Robin Hood Prince of Thieves so i reckon JK Rowling decided to save the franchise major embarrassment by making Warner Brothers stick to an all British cast... and lakota_spirit... Hagrid's accent is Cornish, not Yorkshire!

and im sure there are more...
