Well of course, if it weren't for Lily & James, there would be no Harry so it's a tricky one. However, Severus's undying amor & loyalty for her, even after she married his ultimate enemy and had a child with him, suggests a very rare and powerful love, and it saddens me that they couldn't have ended up together. What needs to be remembered is, the reason for the bitterness and darkness of Snape's character is all due to a ton of heartache: first he never really knew amor from his parents, then the one person he ever loved (Lily) ends up with the man he hated most. If that wasn't enough.....she then dies! This, combined with Snape's hatred of himself and guilt over calling her a 'moodblood' after James humiliated him, totally shaped the Severus we know. If he hadn't called her that name he would probabaly never have lost her to James and she would probabaly also still be alive. After Lily died, he said he 'wished he were dead' and I believe, if it weren't for Dumbledore suggesting he protect Lily's son so that she didn't die in vain, he probabaly would have ended his own life, instead of living with the pain and regret of losing Lily. This is why his eyes are described as being 'black and dead'....when he lost Lily, a peace of him also died. Obviously the man made mistakes due to his bad upbringing, however, he certainly had the capacity to amor and change the negative aspects of his personality. People suggest his amor to be selfish but really, it's not so different to the rest of us. How many of you wouldn't feel a desire for someone you loved to be with you instead of your enemy? Even if they were happy with your enemy there is always a selfishness about 'love' where we want so badly what we desire. However, if Snape was purely evil and selfish he would never have protected Harry for Lily all these years while enduring the daily torture of having to look at the child of his true love, who also resembled the man he most hated. Risking his life to spy on Voldemort for Dumbledore while never allowing anyone else to know the virtue of his actions is also a selfless act. He may have screwed up before Lily's death but no one's perfect and everything he did following her death mais than made up for it. And to the very end, his patronous remained the same as Lily's because of his amor for her. Now THAT is true amor :)
