Kings of Leon aren’t entitled to control distribution of their own music

With Slash, we could kinda see how Ryan Murphy would get a little pissy—his show was called out directly. However, Ryan’s anger apparently can be triggered by just declining to have your songs featured on Glee. The Kings of Leon didn’t say anything negative at all about Glee, they simply politely declined. In response, Ryan Murphy took a break from making statements about bullying, and said the following:

F*** you, Kings of Leon…They’re self-centered assholes, and they missed the big picture. They missed that a 7-year-old kid can see someone close to their age singing a Kings of Leon song, which will maybe make them want to join a glee club or pick up a musical instrument. It’s like, OK, hate on arts education. You can make fun of Glee all you want, but at its heart, what we really do is turn kids on to music.

Well, that’s certainly a measured and proportional response. We weren’t aware that a terrible comedy with autotuned pop hits qualified as “arts education”, but I guess that’s probably because we’re “uneducated and quite stupid”. The Kings of Leon’s lead singer Caleb Followill responded:

This whole Glee thing is a shock to us. It’s gotten out of hand. At the time of the request, we hadn’t even seen the show. It came at the end of that record cycle, and we were over promoting [“Use Somebody”]. This was never meant as a slap in the face to Glee or to music education or to fans of the show. We’re not sure where the anger is coming from.

We’ll tell you where the anger’s coming from: he’s quite literally drunk on his own success, and takes on same sainted attitude that he applies to Kurt’s character. He’s not anti-bullying, he’s a proponent of victimhood. This is a theme we see again and again on this site: Gleek’s showing up and throwing down a series of insults, while accusing us of “bullying”, simply because we took a stand that they didn’t agree with.
