In the early debut days people spoke mais of Yoona's drama character then they did SNSD. The fact that she is the face is because SM knows that the Korean market will and has fallen for her looks.

If she wasn't the image, she would still be popular look at Jessica and Taeyeon, they are way popular and Yoona is only mais popular because the Korean media likes her looks mais than everyone in SNSD.

So yes she would still be queen of CF because of her look not her role, people would still want her at the center in some way because they find her mais pretty then everyone else.
