I really hope GoT finally gets the “Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series”-award this year. it really deserves it.
Last season the show started to feature fewer storylines per episode, and fewer “placeholder” scenes with a lot of characters. Probably good from a story perspective, but it’s also put a major dent in the show’s SAG Ensemble nominees. Consider:
– 13 of those didn’t have the 6 episodes you need to be a nominee (Alfie Allen, Iwan Rheon, Isaac Hempstead-Wright, Stephen Dillane, Liam Cunninghan, Carice van Houten, Rose Leslie, Hannah Murray, Sibel Kekilli, Kristofer Hivju, Jerome Flynn, Jack Gleeson, and Aiden Gillen.
– Of the 14 people with enough episodes, 4 of them (Natalie Dormer, Conleth Hill, Rory McCann and Maisie Williams) had only the absolute minimum. The remainder (Peter Dinklage, Nicolaj Coster-Waldau, Lena Headey, Sophie Turner, Emilia Clarke, Kit Harrington, John Bradley, Iain Glen, Gwendoline Christie, Charles Dance) had 7 episodes or more.
– Those 14 nominated regulars are joined by 10 nominated recurring characters, who are either members of the Targaryen (Jacob Anderson, Nathalie Emmanuel, Ian McElhinney) or Lannister courts (Pedro Pascal, Daniel Portman, Julian Glover), or assorted Night’s Watch people (Ben Crompton, Mark Stanley, Dominic Carter, Josef Altin).
Anyway, point being that Season 5 is probably going to have even more exclusions of this sort. I can easily imagine that more than half the regular cast won’t be eligible this time around. It’s too bad for them this year, because I think they have a pretty good shot at winning.
I don’t care if the new format means it’s less likely the show will win, if only because it’s much better paced since the change happened around Season 3, and especially Season 4. We no longer have 2 minute scenes with characters we don’t even get back within the episode, which happened a lot in the first two seasons. Part of the reason most people aren’t invested in Bran’s storyline is that there is no emotional continuity; especially in Seasons 2 and 3, you got a few minutes with him and that’s it for the day. It’s much better when the story is contained in fewer episodes with more screen-time in each of them.
I posted this comment below in the other thread, but I’ll move it here to join the correct topic.
More End-of-Year Accolades: SAG Nominations were announced this morning. Game of Thrones was nominated for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series* and Outstanding Action Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Comedy or Drama Series.
On an individual level, Peter Dinklage was nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series. That’s his first individual recognition from SAG for Game of Thrones (he was previously nominated for The Station Agent in 2004) and it’s effectively recognizing him for a Lead Performance. He’ll be competing against Matthew McConaughey, Woody Harrelson, Steve Buscemi, and Kevin Spacey in that category.
Congratulations to the GoT team for the SAG nominations. (Can’t believe it’s that time of year again.) I hope not only for an ensemble win, but Dinklage winning his individual category to make up for no Emmy this year.
And it was so nice to see Viola Davis and Tatiana Maslany on the nomination shortlist for Best Drama Series Actress. They deserve it.
(Sad Chadwick Boseman didn’t get a nomination for Get On Up. After the early hype they forgot about him it seems.)
I don’t think it affects the show’s chances of winning. It only affects
will win. This year is their best shot at the win yet. No
didn’t get nominated because it really doesn’t have an ensemble.
really doesn’t have any buzz anymore, and I think
is pretty much done as far as awards go as well. That leaves you with
as competition (the former won the award a couple of years ago), but neither of them has the buzz this year that GOT does.
I’ll just be sad that people like Hempstead-Wright won’t be getting statuettes if they do win.

I’m sure he’s talking about individual actors being considered part of the ensemble for the SAG Awards, not that it is less likely the show will win.
If anything, he said that the show has a pretty good shot at scoring the Outstanding Ensemble in a Drama Series win, but not all the actors will be getting a statuette, only those who were in 6 or more episodes last season.
HBO hopes to launch the new standalone streaming service in line with the Game of Thrones season premiere in April.
