By this I mean how do you feel about fics that discuss themes like torture, substance abuse, self harm, murder, rape, suicide, metal illness etc. and don't beat around the bush. Fics that tackle heavy themes without shying away.

These fics don't portray rape or self harm, or suicide as good things, but simply have them as the main conflict of the fic.

I'm open to these themes only if you're trying to prove a point and if there's actual substance and plot to the fic but if it's just insulting and mindless garbage then forget it I'm not reading it.

"if you're trying to prove a point and if there's actual substance and plot to the fic"

Same here. Personally I enjoy working with dark themes, but they have to be done right. Like I'm planning on writing an original work that deals with a character trying to recover from child abuse and drug abuse. I used a fanfic to practice this and try to work out the best, most tasteful, way to write a character with such struggles. It ended up being one of my most popular fics so I'm very proud of it.

Now if it's just a dark fic for the sake of being as twisted as possible, it loses its appeal. The exception being if it's a horror fic, then I feel like it would make more sense as horror is supposed to be shocking so to speak.

Exactly! Sometimes these dark fics go way too far and end up in a twisted sad joke and become nothing more than shock value.
Now the fics that bring up dark themes that a lot of people don't talk about but should I really like those. Those have plot and make you think.

In my next one I'm gonna be tackling a lot of high school issues. It's gonna be an Avatar high school AU dealing with themes like teen depression, teen pregnancy, eating disorders, bullying etc. I feel like eating disorders isn't a topic that gets tackled a lot in fics and that's kind of why I wanted to try my hand at it.
Personally I hope that it doesn't become one of those that goes way too far, being as I've never done a fic quite like this one.

Have you written any darker fics?

I have but I had to stop because they were written during my mother's dementia decline and I couldn't continue it. It was too difficult. I don't write them much anymore. But I still read them.

I'm sorry to hear that. I hope you're feeling better now and that you can eventually start writing again. I can imagine that, that would be a hard time.

It actually doesn't have a name yet lol. I'm still in the middle of the first chapter. I'll send you a link when it's posted though!

Thanks, I'm doing better and I'm still writing fics. That's what's gotten me through all this, that and my dad. But I'm still putting out fics (they're not all on ff but I still post on other sites)
I know my mom and she would want me to keep writing so she's what keeps me going.

Awesome, can't wait to read it! :)

That's wonderful to hear, that you're doing better. Fics and music help me cope with a lot of stuff, I don't know what I'd do without either. I'll have to check your stories out, what's your fanfic username (if you don't mind giving that out)? I'm sure she'd adore your fics. ^_^

Thanks!

I don't mind, I'm honored you're interested in reading them. :) My fanfic username is misswhoviangirl. I'm on ff, fictionpad and ao3.(Due to ff rules some stories are on ff some aren't. It varies on the sites)

My mom did. She used to like to read my work when she could. So she did get to read some of them.

I've never seen an episode of Doctor Who lol, but I'll give one a read. I actually might end up being on AO3 myself, as that AU is gonna touch on some questionable things. How is AO3, is it a good writing platform?

That's really sweet <3

AO3 is great! Wonderful tech support, you can moderate comments. In terms of writing platform they're more flexible when it comes to what kind of content you can post and you have more freedom to write what you want and how you want it. And to be honest I've written some au fics for AO3 that I didn't put on ff because I was too wary but they're doing very well on AO3 and it's the only site I felt comfortable enough to put them on.
Personally, I think AO3 is way better than ff.

I've heard that they allow band fics there, which kind of has me intrigued. I've written one or two for my favorite bands. I've been wanting to try it but I have this thing where I have to post all of my prior works on there too and I have over 200, so it'll drive me nuts trying to transfer them all.

Yeah, they even have all kinds of fics; rpf (real people fiction), plays, books, audio fics etc... And yeah, it is annoying to transfer the work but sometimes the work is more popular on AO3 than it is on ff so in a way it's worth it. But not all my fics are on AO3, I've got a lot fics on there that aren't on ff so you can put some new fics on there and put some from ff if you want.

@ktichenor I ended up requesting an invite, so I'll probably start the transferring process whenever I get the email. I kind of fancy the idea of reaching a variety of audiences. I'll probably put my more questionable (so to speak) content on there.

@Arctic same.
