All three are meant to have extroverted and outgoing personalities to help with Melody's introverted and insecure personality.

Alex: Melody’s Latino boyfriend that is very much a laid back kind of character. He likes to go with the flow, always enjoys an adventure and having fun, is very athletic, is always willing to lend a hand to help a friend, and is smart. Unfortunately, he is too idealistic a lot of the time and won’t listen to reason because he thinks anything is possible, which sometimes ends up getting blown up in his face. He’s also pretty reckless and has a little lack of self-control.

Magnolia: Melody’s best friend and an African American mermaid. She’s very much a nature and animal loving hippie, but also has an interest in fashion, as long as it hasn’t harmed anything. I based her personality off of Phoebe Buffay from the show Friends. She’s very eccentric and doesn’t really care what anyone thinks. She can definitely be very floopy and at times a little ditzy but has her own form of intelligence and is far from stupid. She’s very overly excitable and that causes her to be scatterbrained sometimes. She’s very outgoing, social, and willing to open herself up to new experiences because she is a firm believer in that you only live once. Unfortunately, that can also get her into trouble when she sometimes tries something she shouldn’t.

James: Alex’s best friend, Magnolia’s boyfriend, and an Asian merman. Out of Melody and her friends, James is very much meant to be the straight man of the group but isn’t a stick in the mud. He’s very sarcastic, witty, sassy, a realist, a little bit of a pessimist, and can be a perfectionist at times. However, just like his friends he has a love of adventure, has a fun loving personality, is always willing to help a friend, and can sometimes have a nutty side to him (though not as much as his friends). So with those traits it helps him to keep from being the stereotypical over-achieving Asian, in fact, he acts more like the sassy and sarcastic black woman stereotype than the actual black female of the group.

They all sound cool, but Magnolia kinda reminds me of Kiara, Rapunzel and Anna, all characters that I really like.

Then James and then Magnolia.
