9 Reasons our Four-Year-Old Selves Wanted to be Ariel

first swam into our childhoods we fell in love. Ariel was the epitome of mermaid elegance (it’s a thing), and we wanted to be her. We even attempted to move under the sea to make some ocean besties. (Seriously. We packed a suitcase full of swimsuits and floaties and ran off to the pool.) Here’s why, as four-year-olds (and, let’s face it, currently as well) we wanted to be Ariel:

What four year old doesn’t want to be royalty? When you add that Ariel gets to live in the Ocean, well our minds explode.

It’s almost like it comes naturally to her! (Sarcasm.) Little human kids, however, had to take swim lessons to get this good. Said lessons forced us to overcome our fear of the ::shudder:: high dive. Ariel never had to leap from a scary piece of wood into the deep end. SHE LIVED IN THE DEEP END. Mad respect.

While we were trying to make our hair look presentable with scrunchies and bows, Ariel was effortlessly posing on rocks with windswept hair…and don’t get us started on the magic that is her hair underwater. Meanwhile, we once cut our own hair in attempt to get her trademark bangs. The results were a bad haircut and a time out.

She wasn’t afraid of the cultural differences she might encounter when traveling to a new land. Like using a dinglehopper for eating rather than as a comb. As kids we were afraid to travel to a new classroom let alone an entirely new ecosystem.

Rope and a sail? You’re set! …Only if you’re Ariel though. Trying to make a similar ensemble out of a bedsheet and shoelaces didn’t go over very well with Mom.

We were pretty good singers at four years old, if we do say so ourselves, but when we tried to sing under water we just blubbed along…and couldn’t breathe because we were under water. How did Ariel do it?!

And they answer back. We tried talking to fish, don’t get us wrong. At the pet store, at the beach, anywhere we encountered a fish. But for some reason, they never answered.

8. Ariel never had to wear shoes when she was a mermaid.

Four years old is about the time when little boys and girls learn how to tie their shoes. Ariel didn’t have to deal with that. She had fins. So much cooler. We still think she should have factored shoes into the pros and cons of having feet.

Despite not knowing a bunch of words that toddlers know (street, feet, fork) she does know the definitions of “trove” and “reprimand.” That constitutes a big vocabulary for a little kid just learning how to read.

Four-year-old us was definitely on to something. Please excuse us as we grab our flippers and head off to the ocean.
