Yes. I, too, had heard of the rumors that an American Death Note movie was going to be made. And, as it turns out, they're true. The encontro, data for release has been tentatively set for 2011.
I have a total of four sources, so far, that give proof for those who want it. The links are as follows:

link
Though, I'm not sure how true that last link is. And for those of you who don't feel like checking these out, I'll put the necessary information here, right now.
Wikipedia says of the Remake: "In 2007, the Malaysian paper The estrela stated that mais than ten film companies in the United States had expressed interest in the Death Note franchise. The American production company Vertigo Entertainment was originally set to develop the remake, with Charley and Vlas Parlapanides as screenwriters and Roy Lee, Doug Davison, Dan Lin, and Brian Witten as producers. On April 30, 2009, Variety reported that Warner Bros., the distributors for the original Japanese live-action films, had acquired the American rights for the remake, with the original screenwriters and producers still attached. The release encontro, data is tentatively set for the ano 2011."
See?
As for the fourth and final link... The page features a teaser poster for the movie. I don't know how much of that page to believe, but it says, "A pair of original names as changed...
"Names changed:
Light Yagami
- name changed now: Light Reynolds.
Misa Amane
- name changed now: Misa Parker."
Oh. The. Horror. O_O

Sunlight poured through the window and filled her room. Saki sat up and stretched. She was now 16 years old. The memory of the dia she lost three people who meant the world to her was still fresh in her mind....
She got up and dressed then headed downstairs.
"Any signs of Kira?"
"Not yet," Matt typed away on his laptop, "Still getting the same signals as last time."
"Keep searching," Saki grabbed her casaco off the back of the couch, "I'm going out. Contact me if you find anything," she left and headed down the sidewalk.
16 years...Kira WOULD be caught. She'd see to that.
