For all the people do don't want to see the ratings drop if we all quit watching. Or those who are confused about our loyalty to the show. We are not only watching this show for Delena. I, personally, watch this for quite a few reasons and I'm sure many (if not most) other Delena fãs do as well.
These include...
Interesting relationships- Dalaric...is dead. Klaroline...is dying. Deremy...missed its time. Steroline...is hindered por Stelena. I know Stefan is the 'good guy' and if he managed to stay on the wagon he wouldn't be bad for Elena in the long term either. But does anyone really want to see mais boring love? If you do, are you sure you want to see two mais seasons of boring love? Maybe it's good in real life. Maybe it's good for your friends. Maybe it's good for your neighbours. But it doesn't make good television.
Character growth- Stefan had his redemption arc. Matt's acceptance of the supernatural. Alaric letting go of his past. Jeremy becoming a Hunter and making sacrifices. Katherine had hers quite recently. Klaus is going onto the new show for his. Rebekah's feelings for Matt, Bonnie's Shane arc and post-Shane story (and let's not forget her disastrous amor life), Caroline's transformation from nasty cheerleader to loyal friend and teammate. And of course Damon, who has suffered and grown mais than anyone else, through all 4 seasons. Who's left? Elena. And she won't grow as a character if she keeps picking the seguro option.
The Blood and Badassery- So think of it this way. It's a vampire show and we thirst to see blood. A lot of blood. And let's face it- if Klaus and the Originals are gone and Damon goes soft trying to impress Elena, we aren't going to see much of that. On the other hand, if Damon brings Elena over to the dark side...blood! Blood! Glorious blood, they're not humans with superpowers anymore, they're bloodthirsty vampires! Which was the concept of the show to begin with.
Damon- I think it's seguro to say that Damon's the funny one on the show. The only funny one on the show now, because Elijah has gone god knows where, Katherine has gone god knows where and Caroline is too busy making Stelena shirts. Damon, at his best in the first two seasons, is the coração and soul of the show. If he dies, the show dies. And if he has his coração broken again, all we'll see is another pointless killing spree. I know that my last point was about blood, but death is a given on TVD and it doesn't count unless it's a character we love. They're hot model vampiros after all, not dracula i-vant-to-suck-your-blud types.
Delena- Because they have such amazing scenes, chemistry and your eye is just sort of drawn to them. Even if you're a fã of some other pairing, you have to admit that their friendship (and thus any interaction between them) is screwed if she rejects him again. So if this goes, the show kind of strays into the good story, but meh category. You know, the shows that people watch only when there's nothing else on TV? That are interesting, but don't really grab your attention enough?
Spectacular writing- They kind of derped with the Sun and Moon curse (which was fake, ha!), but they've had a pretty spotless record when it comes to making sure everything is not only canonically sound but also genius. But the composição literária kind of went down the drain with the sire bond. Seriously, there were too many plot holes associated with it like the fact that she was able to defy him in a few episodes. And how many times are they going to pull the it-was-fake card? Seriously, it only works if you don't see it coming.
Quality of the actors- Which will still exist, no matter who Elena picks. But nobody watches a show just because of good acting. At least, the majority doesn't. And in TV shows, it's all about the ratings.
So in truth, the decision to drop the show has been in the back of my mind (and this might apply for some other people too) for some time now, but I've been clinging on to the hope that TVD, Alloy, Julie, Kevin, anybody can pull it back from the cliff before it's too late. If Elena chooses Damon, it shows me that they're getting back on track. Why? Because it would be unrealistic after a season of her proving her genuine feelings for Damon for her to pick Stefan again!
Personally, I won't be leaving entirely. I'll be watching from a distance to see if all is lost or if there is a sudden burst of awesome for the show. But I don't blame anybody else for quitting because there are only so many ways the triângulo can be recycled.
