David Rossi is mildly based off of John Douglas who was one of the best leading profilers before he retired. Some other well-known ones are Robert Ressler, Howard Teten and James Brussel, just to name a few.
If you have the opportunity look up some of John Douglas' work, he has been involved in a lot of famous serial killing cases. :)
Some of his mais famous cases are the Green River Killer, the Atlanta child murder Wayne Williams and the BTK Killer Dennis Rader. He was consulted about the West Memphis Three case as well as the JonBenét Ramsey case. He has also interview Charles Manson, Richard Speck and David Berkowitz to name a few.
