WHY CARTOON NETWORK WHY!

Is it just me or does somebody need to beat some sence into whoever is choosing and/or making some of the new shows for this channel? I mean seriously.....Problem Solverz? Johnny Test? and all of those reality shows? What happened to the good Cartoon Network!?!

(they did get it right with Thundercats though ^-^)

I studied animation in university, and I'm going to tell you what a couple of our lecturers told us.

They air those shows because people watch them. :P They could take their chances with something a little different that focuses on character development, story progression and sophisticated humour, but they'd rather play it seguro por going with those who pitch desenhos animados full of one-dimensional characters and fart jokes.

It's not like no one has good ideas anymore. The problem is that the interesting, unique ideas are too risky because they don't know how audiences will react. Apparently in TV pitchings, they look for "more of the same" because they've already earned their audience and just work on keeping them.

Yup. That's what I learned at uni. If you want to work in TV, you have to be mainstream, or be unemployed. (though to be fair, they did tell us this when promoting the idea of becoming completely artsy freelancers who make abstract films for festivals)

On one hand, that makes sense. But on the other hand, I think it would do them good to win back their older audience too.

I would advise anyone who is considering pitching to have a good look at Foster's início For Imaginary Friends. I always thought they did a great job. The characters were interesting enough to care about, there were a lot of exciting storylines and there was plenty of humour for kids and adults. And although some episodes contained mais immature humour, they made sure there was some higher quality stuff there too.

Personally, what I think they should try to do (to appeal to a wide variety of audiences without losing their current viewers) is air new shows in a rota based on their genre and/or target audience. For example, every ano they could air a new action-based show in January, a hyperactive light-hearted show at the end of the Easter break, and a story-heavy character-focused show in September.

I don't expect them to do this, but I think they'd be wise to try something that involves them being able to air a wider variety of cartoons. Who knows? Maybe it'll turn out that the genres the neglect the most will actually make their channel a lot mais popular if they air them mais often. They won't know unless they try. ;)

You bring up alot of great points and you are awesome for doing so. Contradicting them though, is the fact that if they're making mainstream shows apeal to a simpler audience than what does that do to and show about our world today? I think it would benefit them quite a bit to at least add some witty humor and deeper story lines or the show will end up like Johnny test. They constantly repeat the same story line and dialog. It has been on way too long and takes up most of their show slots, but the series still goes on.
