And no one has EVER been influenced by a work of fiction in the history of the world, ever. Not even people back in the 1800s who read books like Uncle Tom’s Cabin. In the same way that people are not influenced by advertising or by peer pressure, reading novels does not have the least bit influence on anyone, least of all teenagers whose brains haven’t finished developing. Look. If, when you said "When I look on youtube or even here," you were talking about my Twi-hards Beware video...I never once said that people weren't allowed to like the book. It bothers me somewhat that such a piece of...literature is so popular and that so many people are losing their heads over it, but it's not like I'm trying to convert anyone to anti-Twilight-ism. And most of my fellow anti-Twilighters would agree with me. If anything, it's the Twi-hards that are pushing their obsessions on [i]us[/i], not the other way around. :-/ Go ahead and like Twilight if you want; I have nothing against that. But the inverse is true, also...I'm allowed to like or dislike whatever I want, and I am free to talk and make videos about it, too. Peace out. :-)

Cinders Respectfully, I have a few points to make. Granted, this is from my own perspective, and why I do not like the series. I cannot speak for others. It's not about wanting people to hate the Twilight series, it's about wanting people to recognize the social commentary that goes with the book. Words are powerful, and fiction, especially popular fiction, is very influential over people's lives. The book depicts a young teen couple which is an unrealistic example of relationships and characters. Look, every logical person knows that the book is in the fantasy genre, which means that some aspects of it are obviously based in mythology. But even in fantasy novels, there have to be realistic situations. Because of this, there are people that believe that Edward is the ideal man, and that his relationship with Bella is "true love" and not selfish obsession. Throughout teen literature, there are healthy examples of young relationships which are both realistic and empowering for young girls. It's important to set an example of healthy relationships for young people who do not know much about that world. If twelve-year-old girls read Twilight and believe that Bella and Edward are the pinnacle of true love, they will go on to date obsessive, possessive, and possibly violent men, mistaking these attributes for signs of love. In short, fiction is powerful in influencing minds. I fear for girls who lust after Edward Cullen because they are bound to find themselves in unhealthy relationships. It's not about being disappointed-- it's about learning a bitter truth the harder way. The fact that Meyer's series celebrates such relationships is not only damaging to the generation that will grow up and seek out such relationships, but it sets feminism back about fifty years. To be honest, I have no problem with other characters in the book, really, other than Bella and Edward. I don't even have a problem with the plot line. Basic as it may be, it's pretty normal for teen literature. I only take offense to elevating an unhealthy relationship to an ideal status. Look at it this way: If there was a book where the main character was a highly romanticized neo-nazi, it would be promoting that philosophy, which subsequently influences the generation who reads it, and then aspires to be like the neo-nazi in their favorite book. That's an extreme example of course, but the point is that "it's just fiction" is a poor argument, because books and the media hold power over the opinions of the people who are exposed to them.

Okay I see your point and I said I realize that their relationship is an obsession rather than love itself but what I didnt realize is that "fiction is powerful in influencing minds." I did not know that, and that sort of says a lot about this...... But we (most of us) encourage you to read it, but you are not obliged to. You and ALL the twilight haters can dislike twilight but just remember that you are offending the people who really like the book and think it is awesome. If I told you twilight was awesome, would that offend you? Probably not! I am young, really young, I have read all the books and I have had no change whatsoever in my life at all other then the fact that I love twilight. I have yet to see someone truly influenced by this fiction except those people that pretend they are vampires. I agree that it can be offensive and that and i agree that you can make vids of what ever you want, but if this is what people like you cant go around telling not to read it because you do not like it, or because YOU do not like one of the characters.

Cinders I never said "don't read it!" In fact, in the article I wrote that you commented on, I said it's fine for young people to read it, so long as it's contextualized, and read alongside other good books. Liking Twilight does not offend me. Obsessing over Twilight, in the appropriate place, does not offend me either. What's offensive to me about Twilight fans on this website at least is that they feel the urge to spill their fandom over in other spots, where I have warned people that I will not be polite in criticizing the series. I would never go into the Twilight spot and insult their taste. That's not my place. But the rest of this site which is NOT devoted to Twilight is no-man's land. And I have seen way too much Twilight-related content in some of my favorite spots, and honestly it drives me mad. If I see another "Team Edward or Team Jacob?" pick in this, the "Books to Read" spot, I might just shoot myself. The only other thing about liking Twilight that bothers me is just worrying that people will take the books to far. I taught a fourth and fifth grade class last quarter, and one of the girls told me she wanted to marry someone like Edward. I tenderly suggested that she be more realistic, and she said, "Well, I know I'll have to settle, but still." I couldn't say it, because it wasn't my place as her teacher, but the idea that one would have to "settle" for something less than Edward Cullen really disturbed me. There are so many better men out there than Edward Cullen. And, like I said in the previous post, my qualms are with the two main characters-- not, necessarily, the series itself. Although, as a Washington native, it does kind of make me chuckle how popular my state has suddenly become ;o).

Renesmee-C-C No i get where you are at and I get that people are aloud to share their opinions and also that children should set more realistic goals, but most of all i agree with you on that people should keep their thoughts for the places devoted to twilight or the series. I have seen many people on face book and my space that deliberately make fun of things that others like and I think that is also why i have writen this article. You said it yourself, You do not like when someone comes into no mans land and spouts out there point of view on something when there are spots for things like that. I do think that this had needed to be said somewhere there are people who disagree with twilight because if i wrote it in the twilight cub all the people there would say is "Oh Twilight is soooooo awesome and Robert Pattinson is sooooo hott:D" And thats not what I am looking for.

pixie09 firstly, rob patterson IS hot, he is an attractive person .. so what ?? .. that is neither here nor there. i think that the relationship between bella and edward is abusive, and not many "younger" girls would be able to understand that. - whos fault is this? its not the books, it is the parents for letting their children read things that are not suitable. like i have always said, i really couldnt care less what some people think of twilight. i just liked the book. simple. EVERYONE can have their opinion. and not everyone will ever agree on one thing ... hence all the wars and death and poverty in this world. i like twilight ye? i thought it was a really good book when i first read it, and read it again .. but then i started reading other books and really liked them too. i think the problem is that it had got so stupidly popular. the human race strongly resembles sheep, "thou shall follow one another, even if thou has no interest in what ever that other is doing .. monique2993 Renesmee-C-C, when posting this article, what kind of response where you looking for? You say you like twilight and that's perfectly o.k., it's just that by posting this article on this site(OK, it's about books you've read) some people are going to like the books and others aren't. You have to accept that people will have there own opinions and by asking why they don't like/hate Edward Cullen, people will voice their opinions whether you like their answer or not. I myself found the twilight series good but if I ever met someone like Edward Cullen, I wouldn't touch him with a barge pole, seeing as he's over-protective and controling.

_madz_ OK, im keeping it short, ive already written a huge comment on what cinders has written somewhere else, so to the point. yes, people are influenced alot by fictional books. this is never going to stop, [i]ever.[/i] these comments are based on twilight but the exact same thing happened with harry potter (sorry, i chose an example everyone has heard of). young children waited till their eleventh birthday to recieve their letter to attend hogwarts and burst into tears when it didn't come. people have to realize the word fiction means [i]not real.[/i] i know that doesnt sink in with everyone, but maybe those people should be careful what they read. i agree with your little rant Renesmee-C-C, just because a few people cannot tell that edward cullen is not real, there is no need to disown him. over reactions are not nessasary people. stick to real life and you'll be fine. gamegirl380 Guess what? People have the right to like what they like, and other people shouldn't try to put them down for it. I'M a HUGE fan of the Twilight Series and I get pretty pissde off that people try to put it down just to make fans of the book series feel terrible. Edward, Bella, Jacob, etc, are completely FICTIONAL! The book series isn't real, vampires and werewolves are not real, and therefore, people should not get worked up about it.

renrae I completely agree with everything Cinders and Dearheart said. Honestly,I have gone through this with other people on this site. The Anti-Twilighters have a right to explain why they don't like it, but I don't know anyone who tries to force it down your throats. The Twi-Hards are the ones freaking out about the Antis, which is pretty ironic if you ask me. In a comment, I said that I didn't like Twilight, and then a bunch of people decide that I should go to a certain four letter word that I probably should not say here. And if Twilighters can say things like "I LOVE EDWARD!!!! *squee*" then the Anti's can surely say "I HATE EDWARD!!!! *rawr*"

imbeingsirius I don't have a problem with people liking Edward. Like whoever you want, as long as you can admit it isn't healthy. Just because you like something doesn't make it good. My favorite movie of all time is Robin Hood Prince of Thieves. Do I know it's crap? ABSOLUTELY, but I still like it. So is Edward an abusive jerkoff? ABSOLUTELY. Tovey What I get annoyed about is silly little teenage girls thinking that it's the greatest book ever written when in reality meyer isn't a crafty writer. In my opinion she's quiet bland and stereotypical. It's a nice little love story. But it's not some epic new concept. I know there aren't really such things as new concepts and I'm not condemning anybody that likes it or saying they are stupid. I respect the fact that meyer is getting her work out there and the host was actually a good book. I just think like. It's a book. So chill the fuck down. I'm over everytime I come on a fan website like this one it's omg twilight everywhere. It's just such a mediocre story line I hate undeserved praise. If you liked it cool. If you're one of those "I luv twilight so I'm gonna let the world know I'm really the biggest fan not you" kinda fans then they're then irratible ones. They can push the crappy story line and bland characters in our faces everywhere we go so why shouldn't we be able to have and voice our opinion too?

XDRoseLuvsHP The reason I don't think Edward Cullen should be loved like he is: He is abusive. Whenever girls go ranting on how "My boyfriend should be more like Edward!" and "Now I'll NEVER find a perfect man as good as EDWARD!", I want to beat myself over the head. Twilight is teaching girls that a boy will only abuse you because he wants to PROTECT you, and that Stalking = Love and Abuse = Romance!!!!! It is really sickening, and people don't understand how Edward is abusive. That's because he may not be physically abusive (most of the time, though he is a couple of times), but he is psychologically abusive, which is just as dangerous, if not more, because people do not notice it, whereas with physically abusive relationships, people know something is up. So I do not mind people liking Twilight. People can like whatever they want to like, and I shall not object (as long as they respect my opinions too, and don't rant about how Twilight is soooooo amazing next to the stupid, suckish Harry Potter; especially around an avid Harry Potter fan). But when it gets to the point where it brainwashes young girls into stupid, harmful and potentially dangerous thinking, that is when it becomes a problem.
