AVRIL Lavigne wants to be the new madonna and follow her idol por having a career which lasts for decades.
The Canadian singer attracted global attention at just 17 with her 2002 debut album Let Go, which featured hit singles Complicated and Sk8er Boi.
mais recently she's taken a four-year break - but now she is back with her fourth album, Goodbye Lullaby, and has set her sights on matching 52-year-old Madonna's career longevity.
Avril, 26, said: "I definitely can see myself still being out there in 20 years' time.
"I want to be around the way madonna has done it. She's had her life but still maintained her career throughout."
While she not nearly in the same league as madonna yet, Avril has had enormous success.
Her first three albums all went to No.1 in the UK and Let Go sold 16 million copies worldwide.
Her 2004 album Under My Skin sold 10 million copies and 2007's The Best Damn Thing, which included the massive single Girlfriend, six million.
Avril, whose four-year marriage to Sum 41 frontman Deryck Whibley came to an end last year, reckons she knows to an end last year, reckons she knows Madonna's secret.
She said: "Well, it's like you go away and you come back. I put out a record, I'm around doing a million things and then I shut up and go away."
The singer, who was initially seen as a tomboyish, pop-punk anti-Britney, is now also a successful fashion entrepreneur.
She has a clothing range, Abbey Dawn, and two perfumes, Black estrela and Forbidden Rose.
Avril added: "I think it's good to change but it's better if it's a natural progression rather than being forced."
The singer's comeback single What The Hell is out seguinte Monday. Goodbye Lullaby will be in shops on March 7.
