Good trolls with fun hair. We can leave these alone.

Everytime I see a sequence of imagens rated with all 1's, I wonder what this person is thinking. What does that accomplish? Here are some possible things I thought of:
*Revenge- pardo, dun pardo, dun dunnnnnn. Trolls don't like certain contributors.
*Spite- They don't want to see this contributor rise to the top.
*The heck of it- Because they can and know no one will catch them.

None of these are excusable though! It's sad that they can't be punished for this, because people work so hard contributing to Fanpop. It's not fair for someone to be denied a medal because of some inconsiderate person's actions. So, my question: What are they thinking?

The trolls we're after look kind of like this.

Also, I think of a troll as someone who just leaves mean comments with no explanation. I'll be scrolling through picks and forums, and there are some really nasty comments! And it's sad, because in these comments that have now developed into arguments, you can tell people really get hurt, and that's upsetting to everyone. We need to figure out a way to stop these upsetting comments from happening! My thoughts are to try and leave a comment that cheers people up, sways them off topic or confuses them. :D But, I also try to message the person who got their feelings hurt and let them know someone is on their side. You don't know HOW good it feels to get a message like that.

If you are one of these trolls of which we speak, please, stop now. It is hurtful to the people whose content you are insulting. If you see someone being "trolled," speak up and maybe try and boost their ratings (as you see fit). They don't deserve just 1's on their content, they worked harder than that.

So, let's all stop trolls (the mean ones, not the dolls), have fun, and have an awesome holiday!

No matter what you celebrate, don't be a troll.

knifewrench It has to be said, this article is kick A! Another reason trolls rate content 1-stars is because they find it hillarious to watch someone get annoyed, but I don't think they realise how much it hurts. In my opinion, we can combat trollish comments in two ways; by a)taking sides with the victim, or b) tell the Fanpop Four about the troll. Once again, excellent article ThinkPink!

harold As a frequent recipient of weird attacks, I can sympathize with the hurt, as well as feeling complete astonishment when people take offense at innocent comments (often followed by a pattern of consistent character attacks). It's completely bizarre, but there's really nothing you can do. It's not worth it to argue with such folks, or otherwise try to reason with them - at that point they're operating on emotions, and those are not at all subject to rationality. But I will comment on the article: a negative rating on your content is never going to block you from getting a medal. The main thing for medals is to get a lot of views and a lot of ratings. Of course I don't know the formulae, but it seems like the amount needed for each medal is exponentially greater than the amount needed for the previous one. Given that, a rating of 1, or even several low ratings, are not going to have much of an impact...not until users start to choose which content to [i]not[/i] watch based solely on ratings.

greekthegeek I know, I've noticed some trolls on Fanpop (not mentioning any names however). It's not very fair to just go on a spot even if you hate the subject and be such a troll! If you don't like that spot, then leave! There's no reason to go on it and show hate when it's a spot for fans of the subject. and i also like your pictures. very cute =D

kathiria82 I agree that people rate low because they don't like the user and don't want them to earn medals. I also think it's because the poor souls have no life! I added a bunch of icons to the Gossip Girl spot and every single one was rated a 1. It made me not want to add anything because I get 1's on a lot of my content. I decided to just ignore the losers and keep adding because it'll show them that they can't stop me.

dazl Lovely article, I have noticed quite a few trolls recently, who seem to derive enjoyment from putting down other users and their content. Notice that the coward(s) still hasn't come forward. I am assuming that they are too busy, what with learning how to walk upright. And yes, thats mean, but you know you've been thinking it.

amazondebs brilliant! i know exactly what you mean, fortunaly i havnt had a rating attack yet *touches nearest wood* but i have had a few snide comments and seen it done to others. Love the pictures and your captions!!!!

scififan great soapbox! I love the pics :) While I haven't been the "victim" of a troll attack yet, I have seen 1. That one rude comment sent me on a quest to find this spot. I actually talked with the "troll" a mentioned earlier and found out that the comment wasn't really their fault. Now hear me out...they didn't speak English and had someone else write a comment for them. However, their comment writter was having some "fun" and wrote some very hurtful things. Anyways, I'm just mentioning this cuz I think that we anti-trollers have to be careful. Always assume the best of the troll. Sometimes, they don't mean to be hurtful
