To clarify the question that was shortened due to lack of space in the question text box; do you feel less sympathetic to characters with opinions opposite or different from your own? And the other way around; are you inclined to like characters that share your beliefs and/or opinions?

I have to blatantly say no. If anything, I tend to be more interested in characters with opinions different than my own. While there are plenty of characters who share several of my opinions, I pay attention to the ones that don't because I am curious to see how they are portrayed; especially the ones with opinions and beliefs that go against what society believes. As dedicated a Christian I am, I would not hesitate to call an atheist, Satanist, or polytheist character my favorite so long as I'm impressed by their perspective of things. That's the case for my current favorite character, Leivinia Birdway; young as she is, she has seen just how real Christianity is, along with magic that she herself uses, and yet she takes such a cruel and strict view of everything, going against the entire Anglican Church at the age of 12. I'm fairly sure she's an atheist, which is the best part.

I'm right on the level with you here, exorcist. I like these characters, usually more than those that fit me best. I like getting into the mind of someone with different thoughts from my own, getting to look around and understand that person a little better. It's those differences that make the characters fascinating.

Sometimes. I don't like child abuse or murder ones. I have not seen any anime's with atheists in it either. But sometimes it can get interesting and quite good. Some I hate, some I like

I find it irrelevant what my feelings are on said character, because they are obviously still an integral part of the storyline and should be treated as such, despite your feelings on them. However, I understand why people would dislike a character for these reasons... I have done so before, but I no longer dislike a character for those reasons. Like you pointed out, Exorcist, it does make characters more interesting and their views on the world are often intriguing enough that you really like, or dislike them, you just enjoy their personal characteristics and quirks, if you will.

I'd say for the most part it doesn't, but there are certain things that make me dislike characters, so technically the answer would be yes. Despite being an atheist myself, religion doesn't influence whether I like a character. I find it interesting when I see an atheistic character, just because I don't see many. However, I don't really care about religion either way, so a highly religious character could easily become one of my favorites. The only time I would dislike one for being religious would be if they used their religion as an excuse to do bad things.

Honestly, the moral aspects of the character don't really have any effect on me. If unique with interesting traits I will like them. Frankly, a lot of the evil characters in my opinion tend to be more interesting than the good guys. It's their evilness that adds on to how intriguing they are and how they think. It gives you a different perspective on many things. Simply being something like a murderer doesn't make me dislike a character in any way. It depends all on how they carry out their murders that may or may not make me dislike them. But if they're dull and not really unique much at all, I wont care for them, good or evil.
As for the Atheist one. I will never ever think less of any character simply because of what religion they belong to.

Depends, are they a villain or not? If they are a side character or a protagonist, I'll most likely hate them. Antagonist, It has to do with their personality and story.

I hate characters just like I'd hate people in real life. Except for the antagonist, because they are suppose to be jerks and you're suppose to love to hate them. So if a protagonist was like that, I'd lost likely hate them. Antagonist, depends.

Being an atheist isn't wrong, I'm an atheist!! Lol as for the other traits...well I guess for me it kind of depends on the situation in which they behave. If, for example the character hated kids because they were too loud/annoying etc then I'd find it kind of bad, because everyone was a kid once, but if they just left kids alone and got on with their life I'd find it more tolerable. If they were constantly mean or bullying to kids though, then that really wouldn't be good. If they murdered someone but it was for a particular reason eg. the person was threatening their loved ones/the character itself/was an abusive or evil person etc. then that wouldn't be so bad, but if it was an innocent person it would be wrong. That said you can like characters even though they're evil, such as Light Yagami for example...it really depends on the character.

^ I don't think that the OP was trying to say that being an atheist is wrong or bad or anything like that.

Anyway, I don't really base my opinion on what religion, sexuality, their opinion on marriage or children, etc.

For example; one of my favorite characters is an atheist and honesty it didn't change my opinion of him at all. I actually like how it makes him seem more realistic. Not everyone believes in God. And not everyone likes kid. And I'm pretty sure that everyone has had murderous tendencies in the past.
