Yes, in some anime they do tend to objectify women, at least, from what I've heard about the really terrible ones. I haven't really watched an anime where that is a problem, but, I can imagine ecchi, hentai and yuri anime doing that. Of course, I don't really know, either way, it is simply what I've heard. Other anime, however, may have slight moments where that kind of happens, but, for the most part, I don't really find that happening much, nor have a problem with any of the series I have currently seen. However, I wouldn't find myself watching anime where women are too objectified... I think that is going a bit too far.

Sometimes; there are whole anime that are dedicated to the objectification of women, and there are many that reduce them to nothing but sexual objects- but it is to be kept in mind that these anime are usually a part of the ecchi/hentai genre. Anime often has strong female leads that are not objectified (Mikasa Ackerman or Annie Leonhardt from Shingeki no Kyojin are good examples; both leads are strong women who fight for what they believe is right.) Anime spans a large field of character types and situations, so it's safe to say that women aren't objectified in every single anime. :)

^ Another strong female role would be that of Yuri from Angel Beats. That series really gives her a lot of credit, something that I thoroughly enjoyed. Also, there are some good anime shows (slice of life) where the anime itself is mostly about girls and such, where they just do their own thing and we watch how they live life and the things they do. Those I enjoy.

^^ Good points and I agree, whilst there are quite a lot of anime that do objectify women (Strawberry 100%, HOTD, Baka and Test, ect.) A lot of them also have kick ass women. Lust for one isn't being objectified, she almost objectifies men. So I agree, it's all about one's choice in genre.

Ugh, this is hard for me to answer. On the one hand, I don't want to make it out that every anime that includes women with overly large breasts is objectifying them, because they're not. It's part of the cartoony style they chose, and out of proportion women just became a thing. On the other hand, some flaunt it like crazy, and then they start to step over the line. I'm not entirely sure where that line is, but I can think of several characters that have crossed it on occasion, and it's no good. It's a part of the Japanese culture I can do without.

I agree with both of you. The fact is, sometimes, it comes down to the animation style, but other times it really is just flaunted, I guess. I can't really go into much depth, since I've never really watched anything utterly ridiculous, or rather, anything more so than HOTD.

@whiteflame indeed it's one thing to have a big breasted female drawn, because lets face it, in reality there are women with bigger breasts. It's when they flaunt it all over the damn place that get it a bit over the top.

Sadly, there's some anime which are made up of nothing but objectifying females. But then again, there's been plenty of non-anime shows that have done the same. I hate it when anime is stereotyped like this when there's so many other non-Japanese shows/movies/ect. that are no better. And some anime women are the most strongest epic characters I've ever seen that really put others in their place when being mistreated. XD So at the same time some anime does the exact opposite of objectifying them~

@pumpkin That and making 'get back in the kitchen' jokes, portraying them as weak and needy, portraying them just as a sex toy, making rape jokes, ect.

What? Objectifying women? That's ridiculous. Anime is pure and immaculate as an industry! The Japanese believe that modesty is a virtue, after all!

*Looks at Highschool of the Dead*

Um, well...that's a bit of an exception, you see...

*Looks at Queen's Blade*

....They were drunk. That's it. The music was too good, and--

*Girls Bravo*

0.0 .....Well crap.

Anyways, nice to see we're being honest. There are perverts everywhere, so the hentai and ecchi genres will exist. There will always be Matsumotos and Beverly Seethroughs in the world...and there will be those who enjoy that, and those who deny them despite enjoying them nonetheless...but there is a dark side to everything. You get used to it. Sometimes. Maybe. If you can.

@pumpkinqueen. It really depends on the anime, though. I don't know about what ones you've watched, but I've never watched anything, besides HOTD, that really does it. I agree, though, I'm sure there are plenty of anime series that do it, I'm guessing that ecchi, hentai and yuri probably account for most of it.

I'm not a feminist, mostly because most feminist get on my nerves. But I do hate it when they make female character the target of fanservious. Frankly, I do get annoyed when they do it a lot to the male characters. The yaoi fandom treats them like sex toys just as much as other fandoms use the girls as sex toys. So i'm annoyed either way with that.
But guess I get more annoyed with the girls, because I don't want to see any boobs or panty shots. Guys being shirtless, doesn't see as a big deal. It's only fanservious when they do it every episode and make a big deal of it. Now, female characters being whiney or bossy or anything like that. That is just the character, don't see it as sexist. I either like their personality or I don't. So ho they act doesn't bother me, it's just the fanservious and how they make them look and what they use them for.

It annoys me when series of any type of fiction do this.
Not all women have breasts that could break their back or wear clothes made for a stripper.

i tend to think that anime tends to objectify anime people. they're cartoons, and i don't think its too far off to consider a cartoon an object in the first place, even without "objectifying" it.

^ Actually, that's an interesting point. You've just given me an idea from that, too. I guess depends on how well people identify with the anime characters... Because, a lot of people end up identifying well with characters they really like, they end up treating them like a human (nothing wrong with that, though), rather than an object on the screen of a TV. The thing is, it's just really easy to fall into the trap of anime obsession, where the characters are not just objects, but people that have been described in visual form and many lovable enough that you just can't help but fall in love with the idea of that character. So, I think it's the opposite in many cases, where major anime fans actually de-objectify the characters, because they just love them so much.

I think it's very true that some do, but many also do the same thing to men, so I think it makes about a full circle, I think it's just that people tend to focus more on the ones that focus on women. I usually don't mind fan service at all, I have a limit obviously, but I think it makes a full circle.

@pumpkinqueen, I know this was a while ago, but being a feminist just means you want men and woman to be equals. You don't have to go overboard or anything.

Ecchi anime and hentai exist, so yeah, some do. I'm sure there's quite a few that objectify men, too. I don't really have any issues/find anything wrong with it, not that I like fanservicy anime or hentai.

I kind of have the same mindset as ChadKumada.
