I couldn’t decide if this was really a rant or not, but whatever.

Amy Rose has become a problem to me, but it’s a very schizophrenic problem. In some games I like her, in others I don’t. I will be speaking my opinions about game, Comic, and TV show Amy’s throughout the ages here, as each one is different.

GAMES

Sonic Adventure
Skipping Sonic CD, because well… her role was very tiny, Sonic Adventure had her first voice appearance, so it was a big deal (LA LA LA, CAN’T HEAR YOU, SHUFFLE, LA LA LA! Also am I the only one who doesn’t see the Nights/Cosmo comparison in those characters?). In my opinion, Amy was a thrill-seeking, love-struck fangirl of Sonic, who was trying to be productive, helpful, and seem like a strong character, though was way in over her head. She got captured and Sonic DID have to go and save her again (Gamma beat him to it X{D), but not only was her capture NOT her fault because she wasn’t trying to get involved with Eggman just then, but she actually made some good points that helped. Like having Sonic/Gamma not kill Gamma/Sonic. And trying to help the bird with the Chaos Emerald.

Yes she did chase Sonic, but I can’t help but feel a little sorry for her when she goes “Not fair.” At Twinkle Park. She sounds rather hurt, and I have to admit that Sonic is a bit heartless towards her then. And technically this is the first time they really interact since CD, so it would have been nice if he had been mais patient then. She was following her hero, something any fangirl would do, and she didn’t get as bad as most fangirls until later games. I honestly DID like her in that game. Granted PLAYING as her was a hassle at times, but one common mistake people have with when they judge characters is they will often give them hate for any bad gameplay, even though it has nothing to do with the actual character.

Sonic Adventure 2
In that game, it seemed Amy started out with hearing Sonic was in prison, and decided she wanted to save him in hopes of him liking her mais or at least being a bit nicer. Granted Sonic does become MUCH mais polite to Amy, and Amy MUCH worse in the future, but at this point I still think she’s okay. But I DO see where she’s starting to change.

When Sonic’s imprisoned, and Amy tries to pull a “I’ll let you out if you go on a encontro, data with me.” I could see that her demanding/mental side was starting to evolve. But even at that point she wasn’t going to go through with it in the first place, and lets him out even though he flat out says “No way!” to her face. During the rest of that, Amy does complain a bit about being left behind (I would too.) but she’s still a good character, and Sonic DOES let her tag along for some of the game, and from what I can see she doesn’t act up during that time. She goes to Shadow and in a way is the reason the game has a happy Ending. She’s productive, she adds to the plot. So again, I like the character.

Sonic Heroes
Okay, HERE’S mental Amy. Amy is wanting to find Sonic AGAIN, but doesn’t seem motivated enough. Big and Cream pop up and want to find two characters that might be with Sonic, so Amy considers this and decides “Alright, good enough.” And they go to find them.

In here, Amy’s motivations are a bit complicated. She’s going FOR SONIC MAINLY, with Chocola Chao and “Mr. FROGGY! DERP!” being secondary in that, to the point of something like ‘… Right we need them too. Forgot.” She wants to see her hero, but having a slightly mais heroic reason to add to it makes her motivations mais solid, even if it is just TWO pets.

But how does she act? Well she’s not just trying to hang with Sonic, or even get a date, no she’s trying to make him MARRY her. And she’s trying to force him as well. MENTAL! And egotistical. She flat out assumes that Vector is crushing on her at one point, which I think is partially blinded por her… er… love, for Sonic, and partially blinded por pig-headedness. The only thing to the plot she contributed was a Chaos Emerald, but then again the other characters did about the same, so I can’t complain. However I DID NOT like how insane she had gotten at this point, and so at this point I was starting to dislike the character. It wasn’t that big of a deal though so I moved on.

Sonic 2006
Well first off, Amy’s moral system is out of whack. Basically she considers Sonic’s Well-being mais important than anything else. But while that’s insane and idiotic, it’s loyal, and shows that she actually DOES care about him. This Amy was a 4Kids voice, so the personality changed, so I can’t say she’s the same as Sonic Heroes.

But then again Amy gets some time with Sonic maybe once, and it’s when Silver’s trying to kill him, so I can’t say if Sonic were alone with her she wouldn’t be doing anything crazy. But she does seem mais mature than before, and while still trying to catch that waskawy Hedgehog, she doesn’t make sure that that’s ALL she’s doing. When helping Silver, she’s looking for Sonic, but trying to help Silver out to, and not just to advance her search, but out of generosity. With Elise, it’s mais like girl-talk, but she at least tries to give advice, and doesn’t just go “Bye” after saving Elise so she can find Sonic, she shows she can do other things, which makes the character… mixed. Her morals are messed up, but at least she didn’t try to FORCE Sonic into marriage this time.

Sonic FairyTale games (or whatever they’re called)
I can’t judge Amy on her character in those games because she’s playing different characters, and gets different personalities, but I can judge her on how Sonic reacts. Basically it’s “AMY! NO! RUN AWAY! HEAD FOR THE HILLS!” So he’s obviously not happy to see her. So my guess is the last time he’s seen her, she was pretty Sonic Heroes. NEXT

Sonic Unleashed
Amy had some interaction with Sonic in that, and when she did it actually wasn’t all “OH SONIC! *HUG kiss KISS*!”, she actually did other things, wasn’t looking for him this time, and was just living her life. And when she did see him again she did do the whole “I found you again, my darling Sonic.”, but it was only once, and she didn’t cling about the whole game. And when Sonic interacted with her, he didn’t seem that ticked. He didn’t hug back when she found him, but he didn’t get mad at her, and you can have him talk with her and such throughout the game without Sonic getting upset. So I liked that version.

Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood
This was a very story-driven game, and I have to say I really did like the Amy in it, mainly because she was at least TRYING To get over Sonic. She could help, she could defend Sonic, she could compliment him, and she could talk to other characters and such without getting so stinking emotional. And really it depended on Sonic’s actions with Amy. If you were nice, she’d be mais lovey dovey, if you were mean, she’d get depressed and feel betrayed (which is logical). There’s quite a few times where Amy stands up for Sonic, not just in a lovey dovey way. And if you tear her down it will offend her, and honestly I feel bad when that happens. Most of the time she’ll say “I was just trying to help…” I think THAT Amy would be the most possible to be with Sonic, though I’m still not a fã of the couple.

Sonic CURRENT
Sonic Free Riders was a disaster, and every character was just… so annoying, but with Generations, you save Amy and she says “Thank you, Sonic! I was afraid I’d never be able to flirt with you again!” Every characters was turned into their stereotypes, and Amy, while not the worst, was ruined. I literally shows her doing… SOMETHING, trying to get close to Sonic, probably to kiss him, and Sonic holding her back por the head. At this point Amy is fourteen at the youngest right? I just… can’t stand how bad they’ve ruined her. I was getting to like the character again, and she wasn’t annoying me, but then THIS happened.

There’s nothing else to say. Amy is ruined in the new games, as are many characters, INCLUDING Sonic.

TV SHOWS

Well… Sonic X is all I can think of really.
I saw a lot of that, and Amy was a mix of Sonic heroes and Sonic Adventure 2 I think. She was always willing to help, wanted to prove herself, and actually DID things, but she was also SO STINKING ALL OVER SONIC! And it wasn’t fun to watch. I remember one episode with the bracelet she makes him, she’s wanting to show how much she cares, show how much she wants to have him at least give the idea of them being a couple some slack, and show “Hey, I’m trying to be nice, could you humor me please?” And at the end it looks like something might come out of it. Amy almost drowns after saving Sonic’s life, and Sonic saves her in return. The bracelet is broken por Eggman and Amy is shown crying because she wanted it to be perfect, and it got ruined. Then at the end it shows Sonic WEARING it, after he had fixed it a bit. That would have been a good time to have something come out of that… but nothing happens.

After that it’s back to Amy being… Amy, and Sonic pushing her out of the way or speeding off, OR even using her to his own means. They never resolve the relationship problem in ANY of the seasons and this BOTHERS me. I don’t like Sonic X, and I still don’t like the couple, but it looked like it could have worked, and they didn’t go for it. PLUS so much of Sonic X was taken from the games, and SO MUCH of it was changed for the sake of… guh... CHRIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIS (*Insert Albert Wesker here*), so the stuff in between gets jumbled. It could have worked, but nothing happened.

COMICS
I think that the Amy in the comics is delusional that she will someday get the guy, even when Sonic and Sally are dating. But she DOES show character development, she DOES show usefulness, and she does show she can be around Sonic without wigging out, and be without Sonic without wigging out.

You can really see her maturity show through when Sally officially makes her a Freedom Fighter. She remembers how clingy she was, and is ashamed and embarrassed, and while she does that still in the comics, it’s not nearly as bad, and she even goes to the point of trying to help Sonic and Sally have a good date, not because she’s given up, but because she just wants Sonic to be happy. And while I’m not sure if this will cause her to eventually give up or not, it does she that she cares enough for Sonic to not try and ruin his life.

So in the Current versions of Amy
~For the games I hate the character NOW, but I liked her in the past
~For the comics I like the character now and I did in the past
~For Sonic X I don’t like her most of the time, but I can give her pity and understand her side.

In short, Amy Rose is an obsessed fangirl who loves her hero so much she’d probably die for him, but at the same time she won’t let him get away. She doesn’t want to share him, but doesn’t want to ruin his life. She won’t be put down, but she puts others down at times. 1 out of ten on the “Do I like this character” scale I would have to give her a 4.5 I ALMOST feel neutral, but she’s just not likable enough to me.
