I think Lemony Snicket meant for it to take place whenever you pictured or whenever you want it to take place. Whenever you feel is the right time era.

i have to disagree with you. i see how you can think that period, because there are things such as telegraphs, but i think the series occurs in modern times. the reason i think this is because lemony snicket refers to computers a lot. and computers were DEFINATELY not around back in the 20s. but i also think that in these books the society is completely different, so i dont think we are supposed to think about it much. also, just because the children are proper does not mean the story occurs in the 1920s. but who am i to say this about the wonderful art of lemony snicket? this is just my opinion.

I don't think he really placed them in a time. It could be present, it could be past, he doesn't imply anything about it being futuristic though. Although, they did have a certain amount of technology, so it can't be too long ago. The movie, obviously was set in the past.
